A friend of mine asked me via FB if I thought it was acceptable for Federal agents to go into Gibson's plants "guns blazing".
Now, I have not read everything about the raids but I have NEVER seen anywhere that guns were fired during the course of the raid(s).

It's all I can do to keep from telling him he's full of shit, which I may do anyway.

There were no guns fired.

There were no guns drawn.

It was not a SWAT raid.

It was conducted by Fish & Wildlife agents with help from ICE agents (since this involved allegations of smuggling). The agents who conduct these raids carry sidearms as part of their job.

The raid was ridiculous overkill, but "guns blazing" is a lie.

Denis

That's what I thought, Dave.

Ignorance and stupidity and even worse, the willingness to remain either, really makes me angry.

I don't know many right-wing political sites offhand, but every story I've seen in one about this subject has not approached the facts by any stretch. I've seen the raid blamed on everything from 'pro-union Obama' punishing Gibson for being in a "right to work" state to the standard "evironmentalist" spiel. Even the ones that do mention the Lacey Act make no mention of what Gibson actually did, and attribute the law to everything from liberal hippies to the UN conspiracy to disarm the US, no kidding.

there are plenty of anti government, conspiracy nuts on you tube. it makes for some entertaining reading.

Isn't "guns blazing" just an expression for going into a situation with a great amount of enthusiasm, most likely too much enthusiasm - not thinking things through before acting, impetuous and over zealous?  Not necessarily meant to be read literally.  The phrase is used frequently over here, but guns aren't :)

+1.

I've heard 'guns a blazing' many times for the same reference.  If shots were fired over wood, I'm sure CNN woulda been on that.

Definitely true, but the guy I know who said this isn't clever enough to use the term for anything other than literally.

If that's the case, it's still not acceptable.  There's only one way to make a gun "blaze".

And agreed about the conspiracy and related groups. I own firearms and have joined a couple of their forums just to check facts or maintenance techniques, but the anti-Obama and right-wing nutball conspiracy factor is so high on firearms owner forums that it's pretty sickening. I think those groups just feed each others' urban legends and build stories out of thin air based on their own paranoia.

Don't blame Fox news. Henry J. has fueled all this himself, by playing fast and loose with the facts he's encouraged people to make false conclusions. I've seen respectable sources call it a SWAT raid and otherwise just get the facts plain wrong.
