It goes back to the early days of rock & roll, for sure. The woman who did the female lead vocal on Huey Piano Smith's "Don't You Just Know It" back in the 50s was actually a female impersonator named Bobby Marchan.

kind of Dave, in the 70's i was still pumped full of my own BS. in the 80's i was driving truck = same same.
