Being a confirmed redneck, born in southern Ohio and drenched in C&W music during my formative years, I just don't get Cotton Eyed Joe.  I also agree with some folks who argue that current country music is being taken over by R&R kids posing a country music artists.

current country music is shite imo. to me it sounds like a combo platter of 70's southern rock and current mainstream pop. all of the 'artists' look like they were made in the same machine. press this button for cute male stars, press that button for cute female stars. ish.

There's not much to get. It's just a dance. Not much more to it than that.

It's an old song, and in the 20th century it became a schottische or polka type dance played by bands like Adolph Hofner's that played everything from ethnic folk dances to western swing. Types of music that featured a lot of fiddle. So it eventually became identified with country.

Old country sounds are more likely to be heard on the indie alternative circuit these days.

Weird!  We can still get bluegrass up here on one station.

Yeah, and WNKU has expanded their broadcast range, as well.  I was talking about new bands.  When I was in Cincinnati, the new indie bands were more like old country bands.

I'm no purist. It's ok to be pop with a slight country influence.

Horse thieves were hanged in the good old days country music echoes, but what about chorus thieves?

There's always been pop-influenced country and country-influenced pop, and there have always been crossover stars. Don't forget that Waylon Jennings won his Grammy for his cover of MacArthur Park. So much for purity.

That's not what I'm objecting to. Rednex aren't either. They're a rock band mocking country.

And the current so-called country I consider crap is stuff like Jason Aldean and Brantley Gilbert put out. It's just third rate southern rock (and rap!) that talks about what it is to be "country" with references to country roads and back woods and such. The actual songs aren't country music in the least.

Anyway, time for some more good fiddlin'. Sorry, they're not as pretty as Linda Jarošová.

The Rednex are horrible no matter what genre you caption them with. True crap always rises to the top.

I confess that I liked the Rednex version before I ever saw the video.  I think country can stand a bit of their mocking, and perhaps benefit from. it.
