Dang.  He had a good run, and I thought he really gutted it out on the last few New Years' Eve programs after his stroke. R.I.P. and rock on, Dick!

R.I.P. Dick. Thanks for all the good times and music. I spent many a New Years Eve with Dick. No matter how shaky the last few years were I enjoyed his presence on Dick Clarks Rock'n New Years Eve.

Love this from that Philly page:

He was a cool cat. RIP Dick.

What I remember best is his Saturday night show from the late 50s, sponsored by Beechnut Gum. No dancers, just five or six acts per show, usually major acts. All lip-synched, just like Bandstand. It was the first time I had seen many of the stars. Like this guy.

Me too Dave!  He was a TV and music pioneer.  God bless him and his family.

I believed Dick Clark was an android untill he had his stroke a few years back. That was the first real evidence of aging I saw. Very sad. He was the gate keeper to rock n roll success for many years. Saint Peter can probably use his skills.
RIP Dick

Dick Clark was a promoter. Why did he stand out so much in a field full of cynical exploiters? It wasn't just that he sounded sincere. I think he really was sincere. And he understood the appeal of the music and the stars, whether or not it was something he liked personally.

I understand his appeal, but even at a young age he always came across as plastic to me. My opinion of the man was cemented by his 'cameo' in "Bowling for Columbine," a movie I'm not too fond of anyway. Seeing how he responded to Micheal Moore's questioning of his business practices in Detroit sealed the deal. I don't expect the rich to subsidize the poor, but raking in huge profits from the work of people to whom you pay starvation wages is reprehensible. There used to be a saying among responsible employers that modern business management discarded: an honest day's pay for an honest day's work. Dick Clark clearly did not subscribe to that notion, and for that, regardless of his role in promoting music, I have no respect for him.

Say what you want this guy is a great entertainer. One of the best lip sync jobs I have ever seen. Clearly on the end of the timeline to be a "teen Idol". Looks more like my Marine dad than a rock and roller. LOVE IT!

IIRC that was the only time I saw the Big Bopper on TV. My mother thought he was cute. We were appalled b/c moms weren't supposed to think that about our generation's stars.

Reminds me of this Flintstones episode.
