This has been up before. See http://bassoutpost.com/index.php?topic=6592.0 for comments by Jon (mc2ny) and Baz.

A "100% original" Polaris white with a yellow headstock face would be very stupid rare.

What does the jury think?  I got an email reply, but it's not being shared with the listing.

"Because these guitars were painted in 2 stages. First White. Then the headstock was masked leaving just the front part exposed to be painted Black and then the front of the headstock was clear coated.  The clear coat lacquer aged with time."

Bullshit. The body was clearcoated too. They wouldn't age differently.

Take a look at this 1964 Polaris White Firebird III.

Did you also ask why the serial number doesn't show up in the picture of the back of the headstock?

I still say it's a refin.

I have never figured out why people cover serial numbers in photos.  No one would know if you dummied one up anyway.

What he told me via email is that they blur the serial number to protect from fraud.  The problem with that is that he now admits to doctoring a portion of his photos, and that leaves an open door to question what other details are being modified.  He said he wanted me to call him, for a hands on description.  What good would that do any serious buyer?  It's like describing an item to a blind man.  There's an awful lot of faith involved.   Based on his feedback, I'd say that his buyers are happy, and probably rich and not so bright.  His perfect market.  He's got a nice scam going.  His pieces are simply NOT what he claims them to be, even if they are clean and authentic.  It's a shell game.

I've never bought the "hide the serial number" schtick.  I always make them available in my auctions, even if I'm the original owner.  I don't see any reason to suspect fraud from someone.  I don't get it.

The only reason to hide a serial number is because you are worried it might be listed on a police report somewhere as stolen property.
