I hadn't set-up the bass yet when I took that pic, had literally just finished assembling and stringing it. After set-up the bridge is much close to the pickup.

So how do Chromes sound on the bass? I have an old obscure set of dead roundwounds on mine. I might change to chromes... which did you use, short or long scale? Because I have a spare short scale set but there's the extra length from the tailpiece to the bridge.

I need to replace the 5-pin jack before I know how it sounds plugged in.
The Chromes were out of my Used Strings Box, so I'm not real sure if they're short-scale or not, I just held them up to the bass and they fit so I slapped 'em on. Except for the E string the actual winding doesn't wrap around the post, just the silk portion.

You can always measure the string length past the bridge, but I'm confident that you need to add at least 2" to the scale length for strings that will fit.  That's common for basses with a floating bridge.

Im still wondering if a set of TV Jones Filtertrons would fit.  You might check that out if the stock pickups are stinkers.

I was thinking about getting one of these to use with the stock pickups.

Got a new output jack yesterday, so I'll get to actually hear this bass soon, maybe tonight.

Short scale chromes don't fit. The silk goes over the nut almost to the first fret.

That's as expected.  You need at least medium scale strings.

Installed the jack yesterday, as mentioned, pickup output is low but certainly useable. Neck pickup volume pot seems to be the only one that works. No signal from the bridge pickup, and tone control has zero affect. Tone from the one working pickup is good tho', very old-school with the flatwounds. I dig it, and, I usually only use the neck pickup on two-pickup hollowbodies anyway.
New tailpiece on its way.

Excellent. I recommend my mod - get rid of the bolshevik harness and install good quality pots.
