What's the point?

Increasingly any media awards ceremony makes me cringe. These are people who already get absurdly generously rewarded for what they do, do they really need more recognition and adulation? It wouldn't be quite so bad if they were awarded for exceptional quality, but the only criteria seems to be who makes the music industry most money.

But Classic Rock gives awards to people like Ian Hunter/Mott the Hoople, artists that certainly were never in the mega-seller league or rock critic's favorites. If anything, they are a bit anti-establishment in their catering for old heroes and those who never ever quite made it.

the whole idea of awards for the performing or fine arts, and various halls of fames for everything else is a sad reflection of society these days. i know some people crave recognition while others would like to work in obscurity. seems like everyone needs to be proud or recognized for their or someone eleses achievment.

That's what award shows are and always have been: adulation for stars. Not for giving awards to long-ago acts like Mott that never reached stardom. It's not about quality, it's a popularity contest.

Sad but true. At least there's a pushback, I've seen "my dog pissed on your honor student" "my kid beat up your honor student" etc.

It scares me sometimes to read what Uwe says on this subject. Mostly because I not only feel the same but if I were editing his rant it would take less time than it does to read it.

The Book, film, science, medical, Engineering, architechural, advertising, theatre, ballet industries all have awards so does less segmented things like Peace and helping the poor. I dont see why Classic rock shouldn't have the same opportunity. Self indulgent or not it always feels good to be told you are appreciated by your peers and/or supporters.
