Instead of restoring the one I have I just bought another off ebay that hasn't been messed with.  Hardly played, zero fret wear, arrow straight neck, 32" scale.  Really well made bass.  The neck pocket is cut with a 3 degree angle instead of using a shim. 7 1/2" radius on the fretboard and the metal piece that fits into the neck adjustment slot is a nice touch.  Those are not DiMarzios but they sound really good.

Louder bass!.

The seller mentioned it's only use was briefly in a 'Latin Band'.  Overall it has a few dings.  The worst were these deep scratches on the top and bottom back edges of the front, I'm guessing cufflinks were the culprits.  Micromesh sandpaper (1500-12000 grit) and Ultimate Compound got rid of most of them.

Looks really good. Now what are you going to do with the other one?

That sounds like a 'wife question.'  Since I don't currently have one I hadn't thought about it. ;)  Seriously, it will eventually be sold but probably not by me.

It does have me consider building one of these, though.

Are the new reissues 32" scale?
I don't know.  Did they RI the basses?

Is that a firm order? ;)

Ha! Sorry, no. I've thought about an Explorerbird. I was fascinated for years by JAE's in the Kids Are Alright. Wasn't until the internet came along that I finally found out what the story was. My problem is, I'm afraid 9 out of 10 people will just see it as something like this:

Plus I've been VERY good about not making impulse purchases lately. Which is a good thing because I have a major project in mind involving a Rickenbacker, mahogany body wings, a toaster, and (2) chrome-clad TB+ pups.  8) Now I just need to get Paul Wilczynski to build it for me...

Ibanez says 34".  No binding, one pup, no solid brass bridge, mini tuners. 12" Radius fingerboard.  Glad I spent my $300 on this one, though I would prefer a 34" scale.

All the cheap Hondo LPs don't stop people buying Gibsons but I understand what you're saying.  I doubt the market would be as good for the ExplorerBird as it has been for JAEbirds.  I've had one inquiry for an EB.  But I basically build stuff for myself anyway.

Hope to see your Rick project done soon!

Serial PC tributation... ;D

If you go down the ExplorerBird route remember what JAE called the (Puke) green version... ;)

Puke Green, maybe? I've always been quite fond of Baby S**t Green.  But I'm pretty sure the first one is going to be salmon pink or black
