I wonder if Gibson really uses genuine mahogany (Honduran) or if they use Sepel?

If they were using genuine mahogany they'd tell you.

Whatever it is, I doubt it's sapele, while it's from the same family it's never been called a mahogany. Would Gibson risk that kind of misrepresentation on their flagship line?

A few years ago the guy at Gallery Hardwoods said that what's being sold as genuine mahogany is not Honduran, it's actually big leaf mahogany from Brazil, and also said that there aren't any commercial amounts of Honduran available.

Gibson could be getting plantation-grown real mahogany from somewhere far away from Central or South America. They could be using khaya (so-called African mahogany). Or they could be using mahogany from Brazil and just not saying so. Sometimes old catalogs didn't specify Honduran. Carlo may be on to something though, if it can be called genuine or Honduran, why not say so?

Honduran Mahogany is a protected species. As far as I know it is prohibited to even sell it.
Any guitar company who claims to use Honduran mahogany in new guitars is lying.

Blue or black with white pg
First choice would be cream with black pg though...

Did someone mention fur lining...? ;D

Owl Lumber near me has a large bin of Honduran Mahogany, they had some really large furniture building size planks.

I'm use Swietenia Macrophylla, by law the only genuine mahogany. Commonly referred to as Honduras Mahogany.  Approximately $10 USD per board foot, 6 ft per body.  Lull uses the same species.

It's not prohibited by CITES, though it is regulated.

Swietenia macrophylla is big leaf mahogany, commonly called Honduran even though apparently little or none of it has come from Honduras in years. It's possible that the country of Honduras prohibits exporting it, but Swietenia macrophylla is definitely available from some countries.

Since mahogany from Honduras is prohibited, the species Swietenia Macrophylla (and known as Honduran Mahogany) is plantation grown in many Asian countries. It is a fast growing tree and has become an invasive specied in the Philippines.
