Actually, I recoded practice Wednesday and it turned amazingly well.  I have a Zoom recorder and it is really good in field recording. So, I've been able to save and upload my files using Audacity.  I even made a CD of the tunes from the wav files.  I want to convert the waves to mp3 format for posting online.  What is the best way/cheap software for converting?

Also, what's the best way to share my files online with my band mates so they can listen to our practices?  Be gentle, I'm new at this!

You can do it easily with Audacity

You need the LAME encoder, it's a free download.

http://lame.sourceforge.net/

Then in Audacity:

From an Audacity "project", go to  File: Export as MP3.  That's about it.  Hosting is another story!

iTunes should be able to convert your files to mp3 format.

iTunes did a nice job of converting, thanks!

Can you use You Tube to share an audio file?

Every time I try to download LAME, I get an error message asking for the program that created it.  Not sure what that means.

windows media player will rip your cd to mp3 as well.

For simple sharing, create a free Mediafire account, upload your files and share the URLs of your files with your bandmembers.

To get LAME in Audacity use the link in the Audacity wiki under Windows Instructions.

I've been using SoundCloud for posting music - really simple to use, free, plus you keep the rights to the material. I wasn't sure if you wanted to make it available to your band members or to anyone.

I prefer Audacity - don't like to lock anyone or anything into iTunes.

I refuse to use iTunes anymore. But if you have it, ripping a CD to mp3 in iTunes doesn't really lock you into anything. Even if your default folder for ripped tunes is your iTunes folder in My Music, you can always create a new folder and move the tracks to it.

A little side note: my iTunes moment came when I got my latest computer. My ripped music was never put in the iTunes folder, and I had only bought a few tracks from the iTunes store. Yet when I copied my music files to the newer computer and then installed iTunes - as a first-time installation - it had all the same songs in my iTunes library that my old computer had. WTF? What kind of markers have they put in my files without my knowledge or permission? So I immediately did a system restore back to before the installation. Never again. And I do mean never.

Hey, it's not that hard really.  Everyone here has given me some great advice.  It's coming together nicely.  Check out my "band" thread for a Sound Cloud posting.

Count me in as another Soundcloud fan. You can upload any flavor of audio file, which I like a lot. Plus they make it easy to share tracks without others having to download them.
