After careful measuring and calculating I mounted an Oak 1x4 on the wall, then went to ACE Hardware and picked up some Crawford U-shaped padded hooks that screw in to mount.  They are similar but not quite identical to these I found listed on the ACE website:

The ones I have are more of a hard foam padding than vinyl, but you might see what you can find.  Vinyl and the foam would be a no-no for a nitro finished neck, as they're likely to discolor the neck.  I couldn't see spending $15 or more per mounting device.

The result...and note that the U-hooks can be rotated a few degrees when mounting Fender necks to allow for the offset cut on the g string side...

YEAH!
I'm going to hunt some of those down.  You could always slip a piece or successively larger pieces of clear plastic tubing over the hooks for added cushion.  Thanks, Pilgrim

It contributed it's '66 pup to Project ThunderBucker, now has a '63 Thunderbird pup I got from Baz in it  Sounds great.

If you do the wall mount, here are some things to remember:

1) Mount into studs only.  I used 1x4 wood strips because I knew my placements would not allow this.

2) If mounting near the ceiling, make SURE you mount while allowing enough room to pick the bass UP out of each hanger without contacting the ceiling.  This is really easy to mess up! If you go for two rows like I did, this is critical because you'll have to mount the top row pretty high.

3) Make sure the lateral spacing on the top row gives enough room on the bottom row to hang a bass AND the extra width of the tuners between the bodies of the basses in the upper row.  Those tuners add 4-6 inches in width, and you don't want the bodies on the top row banging into the tuners on the basses in the bottom row.

I took the same approach. Painted the 1x4 to match the wall so it isn't as noticeable. Works great for my office.

Amen.  I mounted the 1x4 with 3" sheet rock screws into studs.  I could probably stand on them if I wanted to and could get a toe-hold.

Not to worry - the image of a gigantic train headed into a long dark tunnel is familiar territory.

Yes, and I hear that model train's enthusiasts' recommendation on this particular set up tends to be: " Everybody thinks it hurts............A little slippery stuff and it's all good  ...".

Man, have we gone off the rails!
