Denis

The guy I've been taking bass lessons from asked if I'd be interested in playing bass in a surf band with 2 other friends of his. He actually wants to play his organ and his sax rather than bass in this band.

Friday night 3 of us met up for beers and pretty quickly figured out we get along pretty well.

At first it was kind of imposing because Stew and Matt immediately began discussing what kinds of venues we could play. I'm like, "Jeez, you guys may be used to this but I'm not"! On the other hand, it's cool that they know what the hell they are doing so I can go along for the ride and learn a lot from them.

I don't care if I'm ever great, but I'd sure like to be competent at least!

Obviously he's aware of your experience level and he asked you to join. That sounds good to me.

Good luck Denis!

I love playing out livewith my band, it's a huge "high" like no drug gives. It's an intoxicating addiction like nothing else - Enjoy it  :toast:

+1000.     For the 3 or 4 hours when i play all my other headaches like kids, wife, job go far away.  And playing live multiplies the feeling times 10....

Good luck Denis and enjoy yourself.....Thats why  most of us do this.....

Sounds like fun Denis!  Just keep it simple and it will start flowing in no time.  There is no better feeling than playing with a drummer who is solid.

Good luck, Denis, you'll love it. Try to take in the first gig feeling - playing live is always good, but it never quite feels like that first time.

Denis, as the resident surf music guy here (or at least one of them), you are gonna have more fun than you think.

Surf is great music, generally up-tempo, and it's a distinct style of its own.  It may take you a few days to "think surf", but you're gonna like it!!!

If you want to get in the mood for surf, just hit YouTube for this Dick Dale/SRV cut - I took the double-time bass line and adopted it....

And here's my YouTube channel, with a bunch of surf.  All if the cuts are a couple of years old, but I'm working on updates.

The other guys can obviously already hear your competance. This is backed up by your teachers confidence in you. Now it just requires your belief in yourself. As a few others have already said, go for it and enjoy yourself! Congrats man!

Your'e a lucky guy, Denis! Getting a chance to play in a surf band is really extraordinaire, at least in my world! The last I heard of the King of the genre, Dick Dale, was in the 90's, Calling Up Spirits. Great record. That strange arabic undertone, complete with breaking waves, and space sounds. Go for it, what an experience!

congrats!  butterflys are natural but don't over think and just play!  your bass teacher asked you to join...you're gold, man.   :toast:

Surf music, eh?  (Sounds like you need to buy my Dano '63 RI)

Seriously, that's awesome news Denis.
Please post any gig dates here or PM them to me.
I will absolutely get out to see you guys play and bring along a few friends.
There are some fun clubs in Raleigh/Durham - you'll have a blast.
