I'm no Black Eyed Peas hater, but this was both overdone and lame. And I've heard Fergie sing better than yesterday, but it might have been nerves and bad stage sound, other bands have had issues with that too.

Must have been the longest 60 seconds of Slashes life! I think the BEPs are pretty clever. This over the top bit of nonsense even puts Patti Labelle's 70's wardrobe to shame.

They are not Prince, that is for sure, even if they swiped some of his visuals I thought. Prince can be glamorous, OTT and still have substance in music. And throw one hell of a shadow all the while.

I have always subscribed to the theory the more dancers=less talent onstage.

I found myself wondering A LOT when "singing" became more dependent on choreography and less on actual singing.  Holiday Inn, it wasn't.  Usher was perhaps the worst - all pose, little voice.  I keep thinking Usher seems to be a decent guy, he just doesn't let his singing talent show very often.

I liked Springsteen a few years ago MUCH better...and even Prince with the phall-o-master guitar.

And I found myself wondering when melisma became something for a crowd to cheer about.

The Black Eyed Peas were awful, the halftime show as a whole was awful and Slash's appearance was just sad. But they were great compared to Christina Aguilera and her quavering voice.

I've heard Mariah Carey blamed for popularizing that - I dunno if she deserves all the blame.  IMO it's obnoxious and pervasive.  I thought Aguilera was a big letdown - she CAN sing, but she didn't do it for this event.

That's one reason I like surf music and 60's/70's rock.  None of that crap in evidence.

Apparently she botched the National Anthem...? Someone else can suffer the playback to check though... ;)

She F'd up the words. Just how does one do that ? What a joke. They paid her a Million+ and she can't even get the words right. Shameful.

I don't know about the words (she missed one line and sang another one twice, getting the words slightly wrong, but the American Anthem has gotten through worse things I believe), but I've heard it sung a lot worse. Inter alia by Whitney Houston. That is not my style of singing at all, but considering it's done acapella, it could be a lot worse. And nobody who invited her probably thought she would sing it "straight".

Choice of artists aside, what really caught my attention was how wretched the sound was throughout the entire show.  I heard Marooned5 playing during the pre-game and their levels were all whacked... same with the mix during that halftime production... An epic pooch screw.

Then again, maybe they just realized the futility of it all...  :bored:

The sound was indeed abysmal. No excuse for that at all.

The national anthem has been botched many times. I remember when Nat King Cole botched the words badly and that had to be 50 years ago. What I object to is the melismatic singing you hear so often today. It's awful, and it's mainly used by people who can't hold key. People like Christina Aguilera. And yet plenty of people seem to think it shows talent! It's gotten to be as pervasive as autotune, and almost as bad.

You could always travel back in time and ask someone: Are you Mariah Connor Carey?
