It was in the German TV news. Never my favorite guitarist or singer, he is certainly a loss. I didn't know he had health issues. In a druggie band like Thin Lizzy, he certainly seemed like a health obsessive. What did he die of?

On his "Irish Album" Wild Frontier was a nice ballad reputedly written for Phil Lynott called "Johnny Boy". They should play that at his funeral.

I was never a big fan but was impressed enough to buy a ticket to one of his shows at the Hammersmith Odean/Apollo. Enjoyable but forgettable performance sadly. Regardless of my own experience of him, he earned and deserves his place in Rock history. No doubt he will be missed.

Ironically, he wanted to move away from blues into celtic rock and even record with The Chieftains lately.

On most other stuff he did, the issue was that he was trying just too darn hard, squeezing every drop of emotion (he undoubtely had if you ever saw him play live) into every note. But his taste in guitars sure got better over time:

He died in his sleep. Causes at this point unknown. I'd be really surprised if drugs were behind it with this guy.

I loved his playing with Colosseum II and his early solo stuff before he turned more to the Blues.

current photos show him bloated and very unhealthy looking. liked his playing but could not really connect with it.

His sound & vibrato was unmistakable. He will be missed. I always heard he had a troubled life. i remember reading about his Colosseum II days when Jon Hiesman threw him against a wall due to him being high all the time. Also I believe he spent time in prison for Tax evasion, thus the song LP Back On The Streets?

Still, a great guitarist, one of my favorites.

Last times I saw him were years back - 80-82 ish - the marquee club with 3 different bands and G Force at Hammersmith iirc - bass being Andy Pyle and Neil Murray for the Marquee shows -  drummers being Tommy Aldridge, Ian Paice & Mark Nauseef - vocalists Charlie Huhn and John Sloman at the Marquee - Don Airey was certainly on keys at two of the shows... he was playing well at that time... one Marquee show was (big) rumoured to have Phil Lynott show up but he didn't...

Never saw him again...

If that is true ... what a waste. Not that I get that drunk often or at all any more (in fact I generally stop before my driver's license could be endangered whether I have to drive or not), but even when I did I made the habit of puking before I went to bed.
