If you go to www.thomann.de and click on guitars/basses and product news, you'll find some new Squier Jaguar Basses, New colours and some with a MM/double Jazz-style humbucker and active electronics.

Here's a direct link to one: http://www.thomann.de/gb/fender_squier_vintmodjaguar_bass_hb_3.htm and I also see black and CAR.

Due in March 30, so I expect you'll see these at NAMM.

I'd like it even better with no pickguard or control plate.

Wrong for a 'Ray, correct for a J - behind the MM sweetspot.

There are different definitions of the "sweet spot" but for me that ain't it.

That is a reasonable bridge pup placement to me, nothing more and nothing less. But in the absence of a neck or even middle pup, it's just hilarious. No one is expecting a neck pup immediately behind the fretboard these days with many people then feeling inhibited in their slapping attempts, but do put it somewhere where the string actually swings!

Or play a piezo bass.  :-\

I do sometimes.  A great 'blues' bass with flatwounds.  Also play a '76 StingRay which  is very capable of 'vintage' tones in addition to slappy zingy thingies.  Its simple 2 band EQ circuit avoids the excesses of later active preamps IMO.  The alnico vs ceramic pup of the EB models also helps.

I'm no Piezo hater. They make sense on acoustic instruments and I have two solid bodies that are only Piezo equipped (one of them a Gibson Explorer that sounds warmer than its mag pup siblings) plus a Stingray, an Italia and a Parker Fly bass with Piezo bridges in addition to the magnetic pups. Dialing in the piezo a little on all of them is a nice way of focusing their sound more.
