Fenderbird Again...JAEbird II

I gave some thought to doing similar to Barkless Dog's great looking bass but decided to continue my own parallel universe of Fenderbird development.  There's also a German company that makes a similar one, I'd rather not compete with something that's already on the market....

Are you talking about Bert Gerecht's Hotwire Funderbird? Uwe has one of the first ones and his sound samples are still up on the website. But IIRC it's in a higher price range.

Thanks.  I don't care for any Gibson model introduced after 1965 except first RI TBirds.  I feel the same about Fenders for that matter.

Yeah, I saw one online around '06.  Must be over $2k Euro by now.  Pretty high for a bass that needed a fret dressing on arrival according to the review I read.

I guess it really comes down to this: I do not like the look of the pick guard and bottom horn shape, not enough mass to it IMO.  I've had more than a few people comment how cool the JAEbird p/g is.  I always tell them I had nothing to do with its design, wish I did.  I don't think the Funderbird's has that appeal.

I remade my JAEbird neck pocket /bridge locator template and tested it out on a second prototype from a virgin blank.  Also decided to punch a small hole in my finger and wipe the blood on the unfinished 'All Access' body contour...take that Dean!  I shed American blood making JAEbirds, can you say that?

Me too!!!!  My two models will probably be one pup models.  I like that option, especially with a hollow body!

Cool! I think that is perfect for a one pickup version and I really like that pickguard design alot.
I think I still prefer the "full bird" for the 2 pup version.

Cool, Jim.  I look forward to doing it.  A pup proto soon, but production, realistically, I don't know.  If Steve would concentrate more on ThunderBuckers instead of sending me Bonanza covers played on his Bari project it might be sooner...he did recap my B-15 and it's killer.  Seriously the pup winder is being built and bobbins are being machined.

Been hitting this on and off for the last month.  Finally decided to hack up an EDEN LH 21 fret neck this AM.  Head stock is a work in progress but I think it somewhat relates to the original TBird.  Standard Fender headstock will also be available.

Nekkid as a JAEbird


Going to use Hipshot ultralite clover tuners with less of an angle than this.  Pickguard will get a slight reshaping where it's tight to the cutaway.


No problem reaching ALL the frets.  Reshaped neck heel, belly and arm cuts too.  Fly optional.


Splendor in the grass.


Don't worry Jim, yours will have a RH headstock and 2 pups, only 20 frets though.
