Thanks Daniel.  I used Stew-Mac nitro cherry tint for the color.  Turned out great!

How many coats?  I know when I did my fretless, the first coat of that tint in clear lacquer was pink, and it didn't turn dark until I had about 3 coats on it.

I used a couple coats of S&S, then a couple coats of the Stew-Mac cherry tint until the color was dark enough, probably 3 -4 coats, all of one can as I wanted it dark, then about 6 coats of clear.

Now we're getting somewhere.  I'll put strings on tomorrow!

Murphy did visit, two of the old pup screw holes weren't covered by the new ones like I thought they were!!!!  Oh well, looks like I might be doing a small fill project next.  How dumb!!!

Now, I did discover the saddles were about 4 -5mm too high.  So how to cut them all equally when they are so small?  Simple, I used 2-sided tape on a piece of scrap, drew a line and run it through the band saw!  Worked well!

Too bad of the 2 holes, but what a beauty! Nice piece of work and 2 Darkstars side by side always look very good. I like the finish also, red with a black headstock is just so sexy

What kind of pots did you end up using for this bass? 500k for V and 300k for T?

drbassman

Thanks Peter.  Yeah, it's just two holes.  I might just ignore them or put a pick guard over them......maybe.  We'll see.  Yep, I used the 500k vol, 300k tone setup that I like.  We'll string her up tomorrow and see how she wounds.  Not enough time to do that tonight.

Nice MacGyver solution on the saddles.  :)

If the screw holes bother you, just put screws in them for decoration. If anybody asks, I'm sure you can come up with an explanation (e.g, "it keeps the tone tight").

Lookin' pretty good Bill.
But... I'm not sure if I like that neck pickup crossing the binding on the lower horn... :o

Yeah, I was gonna use my belt sander, but that's always iffy when you want a perfectly straight line and these things are hard to hold onto!

I can't believe I didn't notice the distance on those two holes!  Oh well, I am gonna mix some color with nitro and see what happens.  Couldn't look any worse!  I can always put some screws in as you suggested.

Yeah, me too, but the old pickup hole location dictated the placement.  I was thinking I could just sand off that edge to let the binding show and you probably wouldn't even notice it.  It's the least of my concerns as everything else but the screw holes turned out as I wanted.

I think you can cover both holes with a pickguard - maybe even use the top hole as a mounting point if it's not too close to the pickup.

And dang, that's pretty!!

Thanks Pilgrim Al!  I might do a cardboard mock up of a pickguard to see what it might look like.  I'll try the filler first, but later in the week when I have more time.
