I really do prefer the look of a classic Les Paul. The 3 p.u.'s configuration seems interesting.
I guess we'll soon get a review from Frankfurt...(ist das so Uwe?).

Finish does matter!

QuoteProcess
A smooth coat of satin nitrocellulose is applied over the entire guitar, ensuring less interference with the natural vibration of the instrument — producing a purer tone — and allowing the wood to breathe and age naturally and properly over the course of its life. In addition, the flattening agent used to reduce the shine on this guitar yields a faster neck

No wood is too good for Gibson..... I give them a C.

Afraid to name the species?

QuoteSpecies
The neck of the BFG Bass is constructed from a solid piece of Grade-C mahogany, the hands-down best choice for players who demand a strong but lightweight neck. Before becoming "putty" in the hands of Gibson's skilled craftsmen, the mahogany is milled and cut to a highly desirable "quarter sawn" wood grain orientation and then kiln dried until it has reached optimum moisture levels

In my book it is the best LP bass Gibson ever did, including Hobbits, Standards and the Doublecut ones, but that might just be my adolescent soul coming out. Those things look très cool. But the three pups transcend the "just looks"-connotation and actually all three sound great. We've discussed them before here and I'm very happy with mine (David/bassvirtuoso who had it as a foster parent liked it too):

It obviously took Gibson ages to get them on their site (they were delivered to certain sellers early this year), I thought they were a limited run and would never make it there. Smart choice to have them as a regular model, should appeal to rockers everywhere who want something different and thought the original 90ies LP basses too tame looking.

I love the 3 pup idea, but I'm just not a fan of the finish!  Maybe I should try building one!
I'm fixin' a hole where the rain gets in..........cuz I'm built for a kilt!

The finish is growing on me and the whole bass for coming from Gibson is a good offering. I'd buy one if I had the spare cash, maybe a used one down the road. Saving my pennies for the NR reissue.

I guess I don't get the finish - it looks like alligator skin? What is it supposed to be? Roughly-carved, worn-down wood?

One thing I noticed- a link to FlyGuitars.com on the side!

uwe

That is exactly what I like - the alligator look. But of course that immediately puts you low on the "serious musician scale".

I agree, but I could get used to it. The pickup at the end of the fingerboard is a much needed improvement. The only thing I don't like about my LP is the lack of lows.

Barklessdog

I have to believe they are in exsistance to get rid of old stock parts.

Aussie Mark

Excuse my ignorance, but what does BFG stand for?  "Bloomin' Fugly Guitar"?
