Nifty basses and guitars galore last night!
« on: November 07, 2010, 06:55:28 AM »
Last night I went to Cat's Cradle in Carrboro to see Man...Or Astroman? on their first tour in years. There were three bands: band No 1 was composed of a drummer and a guitar player (both roadies for MoAM). The second band was "Fiend Without A Face", a side project of Brett Hinds of Mastodon, and of course, MoAM.
With the exception of Brent, who played a Gretsch White Falcon, everyone in the three bands played Hallmark guitars.

The bass player for Fiend Without a Face played a real, live Ampeg Scroll bass throughout their set! It sounded great! Afterwards I asked him if he had any problems with head dive and he answered, "Everything I have has head dive", to which I replied, "you must be a Gibson fan". His eyes lit up, he held out his hand and said, "Right on, man!" Hilarious!

MoAM's bass player used to play Danelectro Longhorns all the time and I asked him about  his last night because it didn't look like a Dano. I thought it was a Jerry Jones but in fact it was a Hondo with a vintage Dano lipstick tube pickup in it. That thing sounded great, too!

Thanks for the show report.  I was thiiiiis close to going, but my son told me about the show at about 7PM.
I was knee deep in KTM parts at that time.

I love those Ampeg scroll basses - I was so tempted to get that Eastwood they had at Harry's last year - what a beautiful bass that was.

Should have gone! Tickets were still available and the first band didn't go on until 9:30 or 9:45 or so.
Wow, I didn't know Harry's had an Eastwood Scroll bass over there! Must not have lasted long.

The Eastwood has a straight, no scroll, headstock, which is the #1 reason I never got one ......

that bass looks like the second version with the HB pup in it.  the first series all had the mystery pickup.  the 2 on the right are original series ampeg  1965 and 1966 (about to get a new set of EL labella FW) AUB,  AEB respectively.

the other is a 5 string wishbass - high c-     don't ask or comment please......

the second picture is my Bruce Johnson AEB-2 with indivdual string humbuckers  - similar to the second series ampeg like the one in the picture AMB  as well as a mystery pickup in the bridge.

I collect scroll basses.  The eastwood is ok, nothing special.  I actually have  purchased 2 Series 10 scrol basses off of feebay.  IMHO they play much better than the Eastwood,  only issue is the single coil pickup that is standard.  On one i fixed it on the other i just got it on saturady actually.

lets try this again...

the bruce johnsin bass

picture of both sets of pickups

here is the  first series 10 i bought a few years ago and recently upgraded the pup

a family shot but missing the grandparents. I need to get a new one done.  Purpleheart bass is warmoth neck Ph fretboard and a PH face over mahogonay made for me by somebody called Dave in indiana - unorthodox guitars...

here is the last series 10 i just got  - much cheaper than the prior one . not sure why but as more scrolls are available than back when i got the first one.  stock pup versus the emg i put in.

Have you been to one of their shows? I waited 10 years to see them again and it was well worth it! Listening to "Reverb 10,000" off "Destroy All Astromen" now.

Wow, impressive collection of a real curio bass!

I feel bland with my Gibsons now ...  :-[

We've taken too much for granted ... and all the time it had grown ...
From techno seeds we first planted ... evolved a mind of its own ...
