Thirty three years ago the fatal Skynyrd crash R.I.P.

I picked up Street Survivors on the 20th - newly released - Steve Gaines wreathed in flames...

Friday morning 1977 - I was woken by my sister with the imortal lines... "Kenneth, Lynyrd Skynyrd's dead..." at the time, they were my favourite band... saw them twice, for Gimme Back and in support of the live double (On The British Road) tour...

Their deaths were literally caused by a pilot who thought he could save fuel and not load up as much - a slight miscalculation lead to the deaths of Cassie, Steve, Dean, Ronnie and the pilots... the years took most of the rest...

And a few years of government conspiracy behind the crash.  I know that a singer of mine was nearly convinced, and I think Artemus Pyle used to talk about them being considered dangerous by the government.  Still, a tragic loss.  Steve Gaines was an Illinois kid, who had replaced Mickie Free (Shalamar) in a central Illinois band called Smokehouse, prior to his gig with Skynyrd.

Wrote some quality tunes too...

I don't understand how anybody can get on a plane or helicopter under certain cicumstances especially because some member of each group questioned doing so, SRV Skynyrd Buddy Holly Bill Graham all died because of questionable conditions.

i saw them open for the who around 1973. since that tour the two bands became fast friends despite the obvious 'cultural' differences.

They never came to Oz as far as I know. I have always loved Leon Wilkesons bass lines. Even though they had so many instruments all playing at the same time his bass lines were just so melodic and at times even busy yet they still fitted and did the job perfectly IMHO.

The Crocs play Swamp Music from the Skynyrd catalogue. Great tune.

My favorite Skynyrd tune is "The Needle and the Spoon." Phil Anselmo of Pantera is also in another band called Down. They pretty much stole that song and reworked it very little for "Stone the Crow" on their first album.

I really like their cover of Call Me The Breeze.  Killer guitar solo by Rossington on that one.

My favorite bass player is now with Lynyrd Skynyrd: Robert P Kearns!

October 21st 1977 is the day my wife & I were married. Our 33rd was yesterday. I was kinda busy when the crash happened, but I recall being bummed out when I heard about it the next day.

Man, I love Lynyrd Skynryd! I remember sitting in Mrs. Satisky's Physical Science class when someone came in and told us about the plane crash. It was a HUGE deal back then.
Why did Salvador Dali cross the road?

there was a brief, ridiculous rumor that ronnie van sant was decapitated by a flying vcr machine inside the plane. :o
