Thanks for posting Peaceful Knievel - pretty awesome stuff.  Never heard of them before - thanks.

I agree that Farris' voice is somewhat of an acquired taste for some, but there's quite a few songs (Sister Mercy, Let It Flow, Moses Brown) where his voice just melts in to the music.
The last half of Sister Mercy is one of my favorite musical moments ever.  The louder the better!

@ ack1961 - I used to have a serious stigma against The Beatles growing up - I was forced to listen to them (mostly "Hard Days Night," "Help" & "Yellow Submarine") with my creepy uncle on weekends when he brought me along for the ride on his trip to the dump! I realized that how you're introduced to certain music can play a role in turning you off or on to it. For years, I felt ostracized for my Beatle-phobia (ok, it wasn't a phobia, but a disdain), since they were idolized by almost everyone else I knew. Thankfully, my bf re-introduced me to the "fab four" - including lots of video footage of interviews, live concerts & studio sessions - and I'm glad to say I have new appreciation for the fellas and the magic they contributed to music. I no longer cringe when I hear "Eight Days A Week," but wanted to share with you that I too had the Beatles flu for many years. So, thanks! I just checked out "Clutch" & am diggin what I hear thusfar - going to listen to SCW next...

Basvarken - one of my fave songs! Good rendition & cool name "Peaceful Knievel" ha!

As an old guy, I can assure you that the Beatles were never idolized by everyone. There was a lot of outright hatred back in the day.

Dave - oh yes, I'm well aware now of the burning of the albums & so forth, but I guess I'm relatively young & all the music lovers I knew were big fans, so I was the "odd ball". Same goes for when I started listening to rap while no one in my small town was. I hear ya

... my daughter has a lot of "modern" punk (or so she says) but it all sounds so contrived to me, but at least she is willing to do the reverse, and listen to dad's stuff - as part of her own education I load up something and say "go listen", and she does... today was Satriani...

Yeah. It helps a lot when the kids have a bit of an open mind about our music. Going through the same thing here with my son, who's starting to write, sing and play a bit of guitar in a local band.  I was trying to formulate some sort of list (or path) of "must listen" albums over the years - just to give him some writing building blocks.  I created 2 "Chris Must Listen" playlists on my iTunes: 1 for Songs, and 1 for Albums.  Ironically enough, on our 3 hour drive home from riding dirtbikes last weekend, He chose "Surfing With The Alien".  Killer stuff.  I also played some King Crimson and he almost melted listening to Belew and Fripp for the first time.

You know, this would be an excellent thread topic - Must Listen Albums for Teenagers (as determined by us older/wiser folk).
It was actually quite fun compiling lists of albums that were important to me growing up as well as albums that contain (what I deem to be) important lyrics or writing style.

Good luck.

That is old music by new bands.
I like them too (a lot), but I don't see that as discovering or trying to appreciate new music.

I need to make my quote marks more sarcastic...

Very much old music by new bands.  I could post my Deerhoof faves again, but even those are a few years old at this point.

I hear you, yet I cringe when I hear someone say that their kids are finally listening to good music -- meaning music that the parent likes. Sounds like so many in my parents' generation telling us what was and wasn't good music and that rock and roll was just noise.

My sons are both in their 30s. Our tastes cross paths in some areas, not in others. I'm glad I never told them anything was a "must listen" back when they were teenagers. They found out for themselves what they did and didn't like. We don't really know what's good and important in general, we just know what's important to each of us.

After reading what you guys are listening to I've decided that my taste in music is ass  :-[

For whatever reason - that band really resonates with me.

Its rare that guitar solos grab my attention, but dammed if they don't even make those captivating!  (~2:25)

Fair points...I don't think I'd ever tell anyone what "must like" music is, that's pretty obnoxious and self-serving.  I do believe that when it comes to writers and lyricists, there are folks out there who, just by reading (and listening) to some of their work, can open up avenues to aspiring writers - regardless of age.  Case in point: Tom Waits. Some of his work is, in my estimation, tough to listen to. As a writer, his stuff can be totally thought evoking.  Dire Straits - same thing. I find some of their music "vomit inducing", but Telegraph Road is the single best song I've ever read.

I have learned from my kids some stuff that I really like...

I started listening to Primus from hearing my son play along with records...not a huge fan, but I listen to the compilation CD all the time...

I listen to new stuff all of the time....it's just that most of it sucks

Dave W

Most old stuff sucked too. You just remember what you liked best.

Yeah, no kidding.  My son got me listening to Audioslave, and I like it.  Primus, the same.
I gave SOAD a real shot - I really tried - but No. Some of it's clever, but that's where it ends for me.

It's just like the stuff we like - it takes trial and error (and some sacrifice) to get there.

My daughter started off on Motorhead (Bomber is still a fave, as is Ace), but we've also taken her to see Emmylou Harris and Rush, both of which she loves... gotta admit, she's not too keen on some of Jackie's older "classic" country artists... (Loretta Lynn and Tammy, etc)
