Jerry Lee Lewis
« on: September 29, 2010, 04:00:07 AM »

On this day in 1976 Jerry Lee Lewis celebrated his 41st birthday by shooting his bass player, Norman "Butch" Owens, twice in the chest with a with a .357 while attempting to shoot a soda bottle. Owens claimed that he'd merely gotten hit with a ricochet......Must have been one of them magic bullets.  ;D The Killer turns 75 today!

On a lighter note....Jerry has a opening in his band!  ;D

Competition time: Which budding British axe hero backed the Killer on an early sixties British tour on his beloved hollowbody Gibson? He was a radio technician at Heathrow airport in his day job ...

Double Up: Which british rock drummer backed up Jerry Lee in the early 60s and then went on to play on several top 10 pop hits with two and a half other bands?

Carlo Little? Later of Head, Hands & Feet I believe, but did he have top ten hits?

Leave it out, Bob...! I was switchgear, contactors, landing and hazzard lights, autopilot, pressure switches... none of that valve malarky... ;D

Uwe... considering your obsession with certain brands of instruments and certain musicians, a bit of a giveaway... ;)

I admit that I wondered for half a second about the guitar, and even thought maybe Albert Lee, as he is on that London record.  I then realized who asked the question, which will be my only hint at it.

I am not aware of Carlo gigging with the Killer, but maybe he did.  The guy I am thinking of is on several hits, and also recorded with Jerry Lee.  Like the mystery guitarist, and Carlo, he drummed along with a Gibson or Epi bass in the 60s.  I will spill said beans tomorrow.

Until then, I will spin the wonderful lp Soul My Way, which I recommend to all!

It might have been Mick Underwood rather than Carlo Little. Albert Lee was close, darn close. He was rated highly by the chap I'm thinking of and even played on an album with him together, albeit uncredited.

Is the drummer Aynsley Dunbar?

Clapton!

Jerry Lee Lewis was called The Killer for being a real lady killer, right?
Didn't he literally get away with murder?

He sure ROCKED the HELL out of a piano tho!

Is that avid of Blackmore with Jerry Lee Lewis? (Can't see it via Blackberry.) I wasn't aware footage existed, but it can't be ruled out as some of it was filmed at the time.

Yup, it was Blackmore. Together with the Outlaws (the Brit early sixties instrumental beat combo from the Joe Meek stable, not the seventies Southern Rockers).

Well the drummer was not Aynsley Dunbar, although that would have been fun to hear.  The mystery man is revealed in this youtube classic which I love almost as much for the way the guy looks as what he says.  Happy Birthday to the man who, a month after shooting his bass player, showed up at the gates of Graceland with a loaded gun and claiming he'd come to "kill Presley."  At around 2:40 it gets fascinating.  As Larry Holmes is to Rocky Marciano's brother, this lp is to Live At Leeds.
