Very cool.  It reminds me of a Landing bass, they are based on Strat bodies.  I like how your's turned out.

The recent stuff in the "Reissue" post did spark this.  That plus wanting to do something quick after the Fenderbird build.  I think I had a Hagstrom bass in the '60s that was vaguely strat like.  Horrible neck.  I remember an anodized swimming pool in the middle of the PG or maybe I'm hallucinating again.  This neck is a LH 32" SX as is the bridge, body is plywood Squire Affinity.  The neck pocket had to be enlarged slightly to fit the 2 1/4" heel .  Could have done it with a chisel but I made a template and routed it.  That was the most time consuming part of the build.

The neck needs shimming, the pups are too far away from the strings and the action's way high but the original neck had a BIG shim so no biggie.  PG needs to be reshaped and a few holes filled, may reshape the headstock.  Refin in Daphne Blue and done.

It sounds surprisingly good even in it's poor state of set up.  has a wide variety of tones from the different pups.

I got your swimming pool right here.

Minor pocket enlargement with trimmer router.

Nice, huh?  You should see the pink gigbag it came in!

5 minutes of belt sander therapy.  5 layers of nasty polyester removed.

Nuttin' but us basses here...

Are you kiddin' me??  That's BRILLIANT!!

I love that idea!!

You did what...?  I see the following:

- Neck swap with required routing
- Bridge swap (bass bridge moved closer to bottom of body)
- Is there an added bass pickup just above the bridge..or a block added to fill the space left by the bridge move?

I own 6 of them in various states of decline and disassembly.  At one time I was making 'Blackie' strats but lost interest, too many parts.  I did send one of these 32" necks to an old guitar buddy to put on a Mexican Jazz, he's sending me that neck in exchange.  If I had thought of the StratoBaster before that I would have sent him a complete one in exchange for the entire bass.  Would have been less puzzling to the poor guy.  Plus he'd know which knob does what. ;D

To Pilgrim, relocated bridge yes.  Those are just the screw holes from the original bridge, does look like there's a pup there though.

BASS pup not necessary.  Try it, you'll like it (since we're doing advertising slogans).  It sounds great and is less filling (of your gig bag).

No wires were injured during this build.  I love that everything is on the PG.  Pups don't align with the strings due to poor bridge placement or bad neck alignment?  Just move the entire PG/electronics slightly.  Problem solved.  Now THAT'S brilliant.  Thanks, Leo!

I often wonder how Landing is doing in terms of sales.  They have some nice basses, pretty much short scale.

Well, Tbird 1958 nailed it when he said he always thought of a Pbass as a 'Stratocaster Bass'.  Except the double cut Pbass came first.  This bass is just returning the favor.

Yeah, today is the morning after.  Mundane stuff, cutting the nut slots deeper and trimming it down, shimming the neck and setting intonation and pup height.

So far I'm really amazed at the sound.  The 5 way pup selector switch is almost like a varitone with all usable sounds, the two tone pots are for the neck and middle pups.  The bridge pup has no tone control and gets a heck of a growl when pushed, very JAE.   I can get an Andy Fraser EB-3 'All Right Now' sound out of the neck pup.  Middle pup is almost trad Pbass.  Not bad for a $99 body and electronics package.

I REALLY like your way of thinking! How is string to string balance?
