Just made the trade. Got the Ric. Some rusted screws, missing handrest (but luckily I already have a spare black handrest), straight neck, low action. Just needs a couple new screws, a good cleanup and fresh strings.

My bass playing son will turn 13 in March. His dream is a Ric and I don't let him touch my Rics... this one will be his bar mitzvah present. We're atheists so there will be no religious ceremony but still he expects a big present... I think I just got him the perfect gift. Now I just have to keep it a secret from him until March.

Way to go dad!  Your son will be one lucky man! ;D

We will discuss some other time why Ilan is so selfish not to let his son play his basses ...

My Jazz Bass has been with my son for almost a year now - I lose sleep when I think about what his adolescent highly aggressive sweat and his many bracelets and chains will do ...

He's doing a relic job for you.  According to many, that will increase its value.  You might want to loan him a chainsaw and electric drill to augment his work.

I say give it to your son now and make it a joint project to bring it up to spec.  Then he can play it at the party in March.

Me in wondering just what an atheist Bar Mitzvah would be like found out that when one becomes a Bar Mitzvah they may own personal property, so I think he's got to wait ;)

Probably a trip to London to catch some shows, that I promised him, and a party for his friends, and since he's attending art school in the jazz and classical department, they usually perform at the party. He's already practicing Jaco's rendition of The Chicken.... The only aspect of the original religious bar mitzvah that remains today (among secular Jews) is celebrating turning from child to adolescent at around age 13.

I imagine a molem would be most unwelcome at a Bar Mitzvah.

At the Tower of London the molem would be the guy working the axe if it was a kosher execution. ;)
