my autumnglo 4001
« on: July 22, 2010, 03:53:44 PM »
There's an app for the iPhone called the Hipstamatic - it's kind of a retro camera, you can choose different lenses, film and flash. Here are some sample pictures I took of my '76 4001:

I actually took a whole bunch more photos, had a few beers, got inspired to record something, then put it together into a cheesy slideshow!

Anyone else using this app?

Don't have an iphone so I don't use any apps, but I did have a '76 Autumnglo which was improved by the addition of a Model 1.

For some reason the slideshow isn't working for me, at least right now. Sure is a pretty bass though.

I forgot to respond - looks cool! I love the mid-'70s stock Rickenbacker pickups, but I bet that sounded great with the Model 1...

It did sound great. Clear and deep. That was before I learned that the .0047 cap was making it sound thin and weak. I used an after-market guard to install the Model 1, so it was completely reversable. I eventually reversed it to sell it when I bought my 4003S (on which I removed the .0047 cap and changed nothing else!).

My wife took this picture with our friend's camera - I think it came out nicely:

Great pic. IMHO Autumnglo begs for a black pickguard.
The guy who bought the same bass twice — first in 1977 and again in 2023

Had a great session! First time in this studio, called "Robot Envy" in Berkeley, California. Small but just right for what I was looking for. Recorded the bass direct through my Custom Audio Japan tube compressor and Alembic F-2B preamp. Here's a sample of the Autumnglo 4001, played with a pick and the neck pickup tone turned way down (both pickups on):

Sounds good. Almost every time I hear a Rick I'm happy I got one. :)

Finally have something else mixed from the sessions:

These sessions are the first time I have managed to properly record the Taurus 3 bass pedals - you need real speakers or headphones to truly experience them. The bass is the autumnglo, both pickups on, played with pick - the original sound was kind of tame, so I put it through my Alembic SF-2 Superfilter and boosted the highs and mids for more bite - also put it through the Moogerfooger analog delay after the fact.

Hoping to get some pictures from the actual recording session - not sure if I have any of the Rickenbacker though...

Got the pics from the studio! I like this one:

You can see a lot of my gear at the bottom, even though I wasn't using any of it on this particular song.

This one gives you an idea of the room:

The bass was recorded direct - you can see the red knobs on my Alembic F-2B preamp on the right - it's just sitting on top of a PA speaker that we weren't using.

Last one:

This shows the rest of the room (I didn't choose the color scheme!), Greg DeGuglielmo on drums, and I like the view of the bass, with the strings and the edge of the fretboard... (Now that I look at the picture, the lens on this last one makes me look huge!)

Bassasaurous... ;)

Gotta admit that that is VERY green...
