Yeah, I remember being at a Polish wedding in Dearborn circa 1981. A Polish-American Veteran's Club. Very Deer Hunterish it was. I was expecting Christoper Walken to enter any minute and play Russian - or North Vietnamese -  Roulette with himself. The house band must have played Kool & the Gang's Celebrate about a dozen times that night. A lesson in why some white bands shouldn't be allowed to play black music. That said, they didn't do Journey's Don't Stop Believing justice either. To their defense: Their Polish folk stuff/jigs was/were alright.

My German-American table mate spent most of the evening fantasizing about his Polish-American girlfriend gratifying him orally with ice cubes in her mouth. That or why his - undeniable - basketball abilities would get him to a good college (Ann Arbor?) with not so good grades (except in PE). Reportedly, his girlfriend was very talented in doing the icecube bit if not that overly popular with the other girls in her class - life is all about choices. American dental care - no fillings! - pays all kinds of dividends I mused back then and even benefits German-Polish relations.

A-Rabs were an issue even back then. Those former minorities that had been there a generaton or two longer referred to them fondly as "camel jockeys".

I think Ms Ice Cube's name was Susan. I still chill at the thought.

People's perception of ethnicity is highly variable.

While earning my Master's degree, I sold cars for two years at a good family-owned dealership.  Great place to work, with its own share of characters.

One of them was a salesman who was an old cowboy type; he dressed western, had a rolling gait from years on a horse, and was superb in working with farmers and ranchers.  We had a number of Iranian students at the university in town, and he referred to them (out of earshot) as "F***'in Mexicans."  The details of geography were somewhat lost on ol' Bill.

I did much better working with the Iranian and Asian students, and with university faculty - I understood their mindset better.  But I still laugh and shake my head over Bill's terminology.  He was only off by a few thousand miles.
