I've been wondering about this mysterious 8-string Tom used in the late seventies:

Probably a custom job but who knows? Looks like it has 60's Thunderbird pickups.

The same bass in action:

Don't be scared by the intro, he soon puts the T-bird away...;)

Weren't all his early ones made by Jol Dantzig at Hamer?

I must admit that the ultra sloppy guitar solo in the intro did scare me off... :o

This doesn't look like a Hamer to me.

Well, it's not any production Hamer, that's for sure. He might not have had any Hamer that early either. Hamer built his first 12-string, maybe he had an 8-string custom built earlier.

He said he recorded the Heaven Tonight record with an Alembic 8 string. Seems that could be it. I've never seen it before.

Nope, the Alembic 8 was used on the Dream Police album, on the songs everyone thinks they're hearing a 12(Gonna Raise Hell, Need Your Love).
Heaven Tonight was 4-string except the title track.
