I just got this off the bay, $549 was the opening bid and that's what I got it for. I think its a pretty good deal considering the condition. When this color came out I didn't like it much but it has grow on me over the years. I am going to swap the body on my '70s fretless that has a Fender neck but suspect body. What is the right color guard for this ? White or black ? This is where it is headed

That's Mocha Brown, right? A black PG looks good.

I think Fender calls it walnut, players and dealers have dubbed it Mocha. Yeah I was thinking black would be cool !

I've heard players and dealers also call it "dookie brown" but I still like it! I think you will have a darn nice looking bass when you make the switcheroo.

I had a '74 J in the same color. I tried the nicest tort I could find (Pickguardian's) and it didn't look right. Black was the way to go, especially with a rosewood board.

I'd ask Tony at Pickguardian to make a 5-ply black guard - b/w/b/w/b, for the walnut Gibson look, with two white stripes in the contour.

LOL yeah I always called it turd brown, funny how your taste and perceptions can change over the years.

I've seen it called all the above, and Root Beer too.

I would go with a single ply black.

Nice score! That's the color I was going for on my Alembicized Telecaster Bass - it didn't quite turn out that way, I like the result, but I still wouldn't mind having a bass with the original color.

For a while I was looking at what was available online, and I definitely prefer black for the pickguard on that color!

I have always admired your bass and was thinking of it when I bought this. I am excited now I can truly say my fretless is 70's Fender ! Even if it is a parts bass.

Even if it is a parts bass.
All Fenders are essentially parts guitars. If the parts are period correct, for all I care it's original.

Question: is this an actual Walnut wood bass, or is it the standard alder or ash with a paint job?

Just paint, not walnut wood.  Look at the neck pocket.

They did do walnut wood, but a few years later with different routing.
