What bass was Wyzard using?
« on: April 02, 2010, 03:31:44 PM »
In the seventies videos from Mother's Finest, bass player Wyzard is using some bass guitars that look like custom built basses.
With two chrome (or nickel?) humbuckers. Anyone got some info?

Check out this awesome video from 1976

And /or this one from 1978

That MM shape is really a modified Tele shape. So is this one. I'll give Leo the credit.

I was thinking the same - looks like a Tele re-interpreted.

Nah, the body is way too round for a Tele.

BTW I think the upper horn of the Framus looks a bit disfigured...

Well, I didn't say it was LITERALLY interpreted.

Kind of a loose translation, ifyaknowwhutImean.

No doubt the MM/EVH body design was Tele-inspired. Not anywhere near a clone, of course, and the sound is more Strat-o-Paul.

Framus was mostly a copier back in the day. If they had any original designs, I don't think anyone else copied them.

Such an underrated band, but the racemix did them no favors commercially: Too rock for black radio, too black for rock radio. Wonder if a band with the same ethnic mix would fare better today.

mother's finest is from here in atlanta. they were a very popular reginal band but never hit it big in the states. like many other bands they were better recieved in other countries. a shame, really.

Do you think it was the race mix?
What about Jimi Hendrix experience? Or Sly and the Family Stone?
Or todays Black Eyed Peas?

Their mix of styles was way ahead of their contemporaries though.
Indeed, too Rock for Black radio (hence their album title "Black Radio Won't Play This Record")

@Bret: I can highly recommend their album "Another Mother Further" and "Live (1979)

iirc I had the first LP, which was a great mix of styles... worked for me... as has been said - ahead of their time...

If you are talking about multiracial bands, anyone ever listen to Skunk Anansie...? one of these was a hit... I've also posteed the live version as he's playing an unusual bass...

If you like, check out the studio version of "Yes It's F*cking Political..."

If research was easy, it wouldn't need doing...
Staring at that event horizon is a dirty job, but someone has to do it; something's going to come back out of it one day...

But Skin isn't half as sexy as Joyce "Baby Jean" Kennedy  8)

I never really noticed this "race mix" thing by the way. To me they're just a bunch of cool musicians.

I saw The Heavy last week. Guess they qualify too?
