Chris P.

It seems I have won the Jules barebone EB-0. We jsut have to sort out some payment and shipment things.

So: The Explorerbird (strange name, cos it has to be called something like an Explender) has to wait for a while and you have to help me out with this.

Colour:
- Off White
- Cherry
- Gold (I saw an Epi SG gold guitar and it looked better than I thought it would)
- British Racing Green and two cream or chequered competition stripes. (Like the LP/SG GT or G-Love Gretsch Corvette)

Pick Up:
- Single Darkstar (I have one)
- Mudbucker
- DeArmond Goldtone humbucker (I have one)
- Fender P split pick up (sorry, just a bad joke....)
- Other

Pickguard:
- No
- Black
- White

Bridge
- Three point
- Fender-ish/BadAss
- 60s bridge (see other topic)
- Warwick bridge

Other options?

Thanks!

Dunno about the stripes, but I love BRG, especially on MGs.

As for pup - hard call.  I love me mud, but also, being a realist., am fully aware of it's limitations.  I say use mud only if there will be a second pup (sweetspottish not bridge) - like that Goldtone you have.  The Darkstar, of coarse, is a sweet proposition too (neck position, 70s style maybe).

Bridge? Y'all know my steez: post mounted all the way - 3 point, 2 point (original or the more guitar-style bridge like current Ibanezes) or 460.  A Badbird or Alembic bridge would also be good.

About the Big D - only if you're not using a mudbucker.

I have a '76 EB3, an SG RI and a DeArmond Starfire. Enough muddish basses, so no problem if this'll become something else.

BRG with white or mint guard, 60s bridge.

I'm not a Dark Star fan, but you are and you have one on hand. Why not use it? As you say, you have other "muddish" basses.

Your DS would be nice if you are wanting something other-than-mud.  I have a JS-II with those pickups.  I'm not very good with describing sound in words, but I can say that they are fairly hot (compared to most of my other non-EB basses), have a broad frequency response (I use the neck pickup only most of the time, and wouldn't miss my bridge pickup much if it ran off) and respond very well to subtlety.  Sometimes I have to consciously lighten-up a bit with my right hand to really get the best tone out of them.  That's when they spring to life.  The mudbuckers seem to compress the sound more, and my right hand approach has less of an impact on the overall sound by comparison.  Both pickups are good in their own unique ways - totally different animals.

The DSs in my bass really spring to life when I use a pick, too.  Probably goes back to that "lighter is better" approach.  I don't know if anyone else has found this to be true - just my own observations, FWIW.

FYI - There is a kind fellow who goes by the name of Happy Face (was over at DP, and Let's Talk Guild) who has an early DS'd EB-3.  He might be able to provide some more enlightening insights on the sound - if you are curious.

Green would be great, and pretty original too. Black guard though. If the hardware is gleaming it will look fantastic. I hope you'll provide pics for Gibsonbass.com (would love to do a feature on this bass, seeing as I have a slight attachment to it! Any chance you could save some half-way-there photos?)

I think green's the #1 for now. Not sure about the competition stripes. I also have to find a good painter who can and will do the yob.

I'm also trying to choose between a solid or a metallic paint. Solid is better, isn't it?

Well, I don't have the bass yet and I don't have the parts, so it'll take a while, but of course I'll make pics.

At the moment I think the DS is candidate #1.

Oh: What about this: A new jack input at the side, filling two of the holes and only a single (cream or black) chickenhead for volume?

British Racing Green is a brilliant color idea! It has to be non metallic paint-British racing green was never metallic-the racing stripes are too Fender Mustang and will detract from British Racing Green, which is a subtle and very rich color.

Actually an LP cream colored pickguard would be very British & stunning, in my opinion.

I agree with the Dark Star, you already have it and it fits, so why not use it. Love the Chicken Head idea.

Cream would look good, but black would be better (IMO) - the edging would stand out nicely, and the black would match the darkstar, and not detract from the beautiful chrome/nickel

What the heck... get both!

Chris P.

Two pickguards!?!? Like the Everley Brothers J200???

YES!  (I emphatically agree with all the above)

The green would look cool with or without the stripes.

In have this series in mind:

Or maybe a bit like:

Colour idea:

Nocturnal

The metallic blue with white stripes would be a cool finish IMO. But the green/black combo would be pretty nice as well.
