Rewinding mini-buckers

Just got an email from Curtis Novak in response to one in which I asked him about a fatter sounding mini-bucker:

"I think the mini would be hard to wind with fatter wire as the cover will really limit the coil size. I might be interested in seeing the choke."

I am sorry to say a fatter wire/fatter sounding mini-bucker that looks like an original is prolly not coming forth.

I am not giving up on the chokes just yet though.

He has been ill for a few weeks and right now he is playing catch up.

Hmmmm.....maybe a nice fat wire PAF 4 Pole Bassbucker specifically wound to compliment the Muddy one?????? Gibby spacing of course using a mini as a guide for pole spacing.

Think I'll go compare my Model G and my mini for pole spacing.
I can be true to you sweety until I find a nice medium scale with great breasts. ... CW

I haven't picked one yet, but I have been wavering between the DiMarzio DP198 (13.36k) and the Duncan SM2b as my way of matching up to a mudbucker and giving the EB3 lead pup more oomph.  The original is just a guitar pickup anyway, so those options are off the shelf more capable of doing the thing some justice.

The model G should line up the same as a mini for pole spacing.  The g is just a tad too big to fit in there.
Model One and Schallers?  Ish.

Firebird owners know that you cannot get it to sound much fatter without giving up the minibuckers and going for larger humbuckers. Still I wonder, are there Firebird minibucker upgrades out there that could also be used on a bass?
We've taken too much for granted ... and all the time it had grown ...
From techno seeds we first planted ... evolved a mind of its own ...

Why not?

For that matter, the hotter/metalhead minibuckers tend to not use individual pole pieces, so the field would be more useful for bendy kind of players.

Yea, things under a mini cover is pretty tight I've heard, you cannot add more wire turns to make those things hotter.
But most of the firebirdians like their pups the way they are, they have some single-coilish qualities, ok, they sound bony for the bridge of a bass but thats their sound.

you might be able to squish one of the epi les paul standard pickup guts in there, in the bridge position they do not sound that bad...

the reason why they might fit is because there is nothing "hard" inside except for the 2 blades, the coil windings that seem to be pretty loosley wound at that, small magnet in the middle, this mess is dropped into the chrome cover and a whole crap load of wax is poured in and set, there is so much space that the one I tore apart for the cover, the coils and blades sat in there all crooked..

the whole thing is made out of wax, just heat it up and squeeze it into the minibucker cover..

see all the wax in between the blades and outer edges?

You may destroy the delicate windings doing so. Ofcourse thats ok if you are planning to rewind them!
Also there's a reason those epi pups they are wound "short and wide" and not "tall and skinny", short and wide bobbins sound much fatter than tall and skinny.
