24 years ago today: Remembering Phil Lynott

Philip Parris Lynott passed on.  He was one of the guys I wanted to be like when I started playing.  I bought me a black P bass in 1979 because of him.  RIP Phil!

I was living in England at the time and was saddened but not too shocked when it happened. His professional life seemed on the upswing (he'd had two hits with Gary Moore in 1985) but his personal life wasn't doing so well. There was a lot of controversy surrounding his death and rumors of poor treatment he received from emergency personnel, but I don't remember many details all these years later. What I do remember is being really depressed that another great musician had destroyed his life with booze and drugs. Phil was a true artist, but seemed a tortured one at that. R.I.P.

One of the greatest singer/songwriters as well as being a great bassplayer & band leader.
Yesterday was the 24th anniversary of his death.

Been watching lots of Thin Lizzy vids on youtube yesterday & today.

His last hit was his highest chart topper with Gary Moore; it was #3 in Ireland & #5 in the UK:

...but Alas! the drug & alcohol abuse did him in.

But I have to disagree with Terry about him getting better and better.
The stuff he recorded with Grand Slam couldn't hold a candle next to Thin Lizzy.
The drugs had already taken their toll...

RIP Phil, I remember what a breath of fresh air they where when they came out, classic, under rated the best stuff usually is. Man I count myself lucky all those pitfalls were in my path, I chose for the most part to go around them. I was at the Drs today for a little procedure and with each check point they checked my age....................."you sure don't look 50" was the refrain when they found out I don't take any meds they were almost speachless. I am so fortunate to still be able to do it. As I like to say I may not have all my hair but I got all my teeth

Sorry, but gotta agree with Basvarken.  That video clip was hardly the Philip Lynott of legend.  He sounds good, but it does look like he's struggling to do it all.  I've got a VHS tape, Dedication, that has all the best Thin Lizzy stuff.  I'll have to dig it out.

The Live CD that came out last year "Still Dangerous" is very good too.  I remember spending a lot of time learning this song from the Bad Reputation LP.  Kind of an eerie title though........

I just read Clapton's autobiography in 2 days!!
It goes from ENTHRALLING to APPALLING & back to ENTHRALLING.
The appalling part is his drug & alcohol problems.
He really put out a lot of his fire with smack & alcohol. Alas
Just as he came back to life & has had HUGE success I think Phil would have too if he went thru rehab.

Clapton sure has redeemed himself by building the Crossroads center & auctioning guitars to fund it.
AMAZING how much people paid for his axes!!! 

I sure wish someone would have stepped in to help Phil as Clapton's friends helped him.
