Saw "Avatar" with the gf this weekend and I thought it was amazing. Sure, they story was predictable and the plot reminded me of "Dances With Wolves" but the effects sure were worth seeing. When I got home I looked through my Roger Dean book at all the floating islands and weird creatures.

We saw it yesterday as well.  We really enjoyed it.  The 3D was awesome!

I started hearing from people I know that they hated it, thought it was horrible. I did not understand till I connected the dots. They are Christian Republicans. Turns out I was not imagining this.

I just saw it as an Sci fi movie. Had no idea it was offensive.

John (four pizzas) Podhoretz is hardly a Christian Republican.

No matter the movie, if it has any message at all, some people are bound to dislike it.

Barklessdog

No, but the people I personally know who did, are.

I hope I can tread these waters in a responsible manner. First off, having not seen the movie the only opinions I have stated here were come to by being familiar with the progress of the production from knowing one of the crew and reading reviews and comments from those I find whose views usually comport with mine. Not that everyone's has to, but in this instance it means I trust the view they ascribed to the film. That being said, the political skew of Avatar was described by James Cameron himself in interviews about the movie (including one I saw online from the Today Show (a program I usually avoid).

None of these things makes Avatar any different than most every other movie released by the Hollywood machine. It's up to every individual to decide whether they choose to see the film (and support those views with their dollars) or not. Most will see it without even thinking of it in these terms (and that's fine), but for those who choose not to (or who see it but hate it), labeling them in pejorative terms like the L.A. Times chooses to do is not a reasonable way to discuss the fact that some people don't have the same world view as they do.

it's too bad that politics, left or right has to stick it's ugly head into almost every corner of american life. :P i stopped watching movies years ago for many reasons so in my case ignorance is indeed bliss.

I like to think I'm in the middle...this pisses off everybody, regardless of race, creed, color or national origin--not to mention political persuasion.

I have no patience for people who view everything in life through the lens of a single issue.  Whether that issue is religion, political persuasion or something else, ya gotta let go sometimes and just enjoy.

The main theme in Avatar of big mining companies displacing native populations rings true in many countries, mine included.

Oh, and when I saw the movie I was wondering.  Do they "mate" in the traditional way (this was not clear in the "mating" scene), or does sex somehow involve joining those fibre optics in their tails?  The horse certainly got a thrill when the guy joined his ponytail to her mane, so I'm not sure if genitals are involved.

Maybe they do it in the water, like all those old folks in "Cocoon"!

You'll have to do some xenobiological research - the "Star Trek" universe has a view that some kind of "repition of design" goes on, hence "Spock" thinks, therefore he exists... (at least in literature, cinematography, and in various dimensional shifts... ;D)

I suspect it may be dangerous to risk experimantation - the cultural risks of misinterpretation could be lethal...  :o

Missed it this week as now signed off sick for 2 weeks (labrynthitis - keep falling over - not fun...)

If research was easy, it wouldn't need doing...
Staring at that event horizon is a dirty job, but someone has to do it; something's going to come back out of it one day...

Avatar may sink Titanic!

Hope it does. Brilliant film!

Interesting question about sex habits. I would venture to guess that they do it the same way us humans on earth do it, with the added "TELEPATHY" of the "fiber-optics".
I sure would SHTUP the HELL outa that tigress babe!
