Some close friends Michael and Shelly had a tragedy last Friday. They lost their 16 year old boy in what can only be described as a bizarre  road crash. They live near us in the hills and Sam was simply running errands in the ute for his mum when a garbage truck lost control on the dirt road near their property and tipped over on its side crushing the cabin of the ute and killing Sam. No other cars around for miles, Sam wasn't speeding, just an unreal turn of events.

Sam

Sam was about to start an apprenticeship with his dads company. I have the utmost respect for Michael and cant fathom what he must be going through right now.

Awful. I can not imagine. My heart goes out to his parents.

Horrible to loose someone so young.

The local hills paper has run a story which has a list of comments from locals claiming they have complained to the local council about the speed and recklessness of this particular driver during the last 6 months. There is a lot of anger here at the moment.

Wow, I'm sorry to hear this. My condolences to Michael and Shelly, their friends and family.

That is so tragic. As a parent, you just don't want to survive your kid(s). Best wishes to them and I hope they pull through as a family and couple. They will need outside help and should go to one of those circles of grieving parents who have lost a kid.

Is it asking too much of car security that the cab of especially a ute should be able to withstand the force of a toppling garbage truck in this day and age? I had to look up what ute meant - my first thought was you were talking about some unprotected quad bike. On the pic, the car looks surprisingly fine, but the cab looks caved in like cardboard. Not Tonka quality at all (referring to Sam's T-shirt).

Condolences to his family.

Same age as my daughter... the worst of circumstances and there is no such thing as a "worst time to happen..."

Uwe... I doubt any of the top-of-the-line vehicles with the highest of safety specs could have survived a "direct-hit" of that variety... the pic looks like the truck hit the ute with a "glancing blow" as it toppled... death would almost certainly have been instantaneous...

No matter what is done now, it will never bring anyone back; anger will pass; maybe, hopefully, things will change...

Death is no respecter of age or position in society and a path we all take one day...

Even a mine-spec ROPS cab would not withstand a hit like that.

Condolences to the family from me too.

This is something that I could not fathom overcoming - nothing in the world could be worse than the loss of the child.  My condolences to the family.

No parent can hear a story like this without a shudder.  My sincere regrets and condolences go out to the family.

I sit here, looking at my boys playing in the room next to me and I feel sick inside for this young man and his family. My condolences to them. Maybe the complaints of speed and reckless driving might get some attention now, not that it will help here.
