I'm sure the Hofner sounds fine for what it is. No mistaking that particular sound. That said, IMHO it doesn't fare well when compared to most others.

Would I knock a German product? The Höfner sounds great and one of a kind. In the comfort of your living room or in a club. When it comes to projecting a bass sound in an arena against modern day electric guitars, drums and state-of-the-art keyboards there are more audible/assertive alternatives. The lack of sustain does rob the bass of some "thereness".

But it's an iconic little instrument. That said, I lice Macca's more lively bass sound on something even as trivial as, say, Silly Love Songs better. And what's wrong with that ... I'd like to know?
