Looks like a space for a sliding "jazz" style pick-up.

I always thought sliding pick-ups were a cool idea. but most had a big cavity for some reason.

I think Dan Armstrong got it right on the London Bass.

There is a very cool information (they don't sell anything) website about him and his guitars, he was way ahead of his time. Check it out sometime www.danarmstrong.org
