Can't agree re the quality of the carving... if you look closely at the inset pics you can see she's not finished off, a craftsman would be needed to finish of the works...

I think you're just the guy, Kenny. Go for it!  ;)

No, I perfectly agree that you are not fond of them.  ;) And have never minced words about that fact either.

For people who like the SG shape, but prefer a clearer-sounding bass than the traditional maho-mudbucker combo would allow, they are a resonable alternative, that's all.

Believe it or not, all I would do is clean up the carving and stain black the open wood so it stands out better...

Come on, get up off the floor; it's not that shocking that I might do something considered "tasteful", is it...?

Good carving should not have to relay on black to make it "pop", I think its almost as bad a crutch as "wood burning" techiniques.

I also agree that the carving is only half way there. A nice wood chisel carvil job could really take it to another level.

Highlander

I agree with you, John, but it really depends on the upper finish to make it "POP"... the upper finish just does not work to bring the carving "forward" ...

... and was that a (not so subtle) comment on my "branded" RD, my fellow maple RD player...?   ;D  ;)  ;D

I withdraw my "staining" and, as I have pledged to Lord Hornung (and obviosly, my fellow players), I am trying to amend my ways; I have far too many blots on my copy-book as it is...

Mark... I did think about it (US bids only) but... all the usual excuses at the mo...

Late to the party, but I was out of town.  At any rate, I have really strong memories of this hippie era variant of folk art.  The relief carved SGs of the late 60s and early 70s were kind of popular in a somewhat greater way than feeding LSD to infants on communes was, and there was one particular guy who was so well known for this variety of vandalism that he actually rated an article in Guitar Player sometime around 1971.  As suspected the Guilds were a take off on the fad in a desperate attempt to unload them somehow.  I don't know if the Madeira import variants ever had that done, but it wouldn't surprise me.  Thankfully the fad died out pretty soon after, but not before this poor bass got the Friends Of Michael Stivic look.  I think it would only look good with its neck and hardware removed, and the body deposited in a bonfire.
Model One and Schallers?  Ish.

This bass has been around the block a few times, she has crabs.
