Four new Asia tracks ...
« on: February 25, 2008, 06:54:23 AM »
Here: http://www.originalasia.com/

Needless to say, they won't send anybody scurrying to buy the CD who didn't even like them first time around (don't bother, Dave!) , but they don't sound washed out either. Wetton's voice isn't quite as angelic as it used to be, I actually like it better now. Palmer's drumming is still pompous - the best circus band drummer in the world. Hats off to Geoff Downes for that unabashed eighties keyboard wizardry, but he can also still pump the Hammond (or a synth that sounds like it!) and Steve Howe's angular playing will always have idiosyncratic charm to me.

Actually sounds good, even a bit abstract in parts-      Then I realized I was listening to Nels Cline Destroy All Monsters - OOOOPS!

 ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

Back to Asia - Does sound good like an old friend, in all its grandeur, like a glittery glove that feels good to put on, but everybody makes fun of.

Hope spandex is forbidden from the tour!

That's an apt way of putting it.  :)

I've resigned myself to the realization that John and I are the only ones here who own up to actually liking them. Sigh!

I'm not ashamed of it and I'm not proud it!

But I like all kinds of music. Hip Hop, Rap & country are the only genre's that I have trouble listening to consistently.

There is good music in all genres.

You know Uwe we are hardly a dying breed, there are a lot of prog lovers at Talkbass, most of them younger too.Groups like Porcupine Tree have a large younger following now.

They don't remember the shame that is trying to be inflicted here, when prog was a dirty word.

 :P Geez, don't go getting a complex over it! :D

I can take or leave the prog thing.  Asia to me was a case of "what ever can we do to make some money now"  - they just never did a thing for me - a retreaded Asia is just worse - IMO

Put Wetton back in Crimson for an album? Now I'd be interested. But Asia? Nah.

I liked Asia, but always thought they had a little too much filler material for a band with their credentials.  I always loved the video for "Sole Survivor" (I think that was the one), where Wetton looked like hell - unshaven, greasy hair, disheveled.  Somehow, it fit the mood of the video, but I'd guess he'd been on a bender.  Was it someone here that spent some time with Wetton, and said he's a big drinker.

Yes, he's an admitted alcoholic which was the downfall of Asia's line up more than once. But he's been clean for several years now and I guess his recent heart surgery reminds him to stay that way.
