Just down the road from me - where the invasion started in a certain sci-fi classic... ;)

How common are these - never seen one before...?

In the Register on the RickResource forum there are 1526 4003's and 26 2030's registered. This should give a relative indication.

Rare, but for a reason: they never really caught on.

These were RIC's attempt at a budget bass that will appeal to the Fender crowd, but it didn't.

They usually go for $500-800.

Highlander

In that case, severely over-priced... ;)

Prices are climbing for the budget Ricks. I have 800 euro in mind for the 2030. And I even saw a couple of 3000's with non original pickups go for 800+ (euro).

A customer of mine bought a 2030 when he was in the US about three years ago, and the guy selling it was asking $400. He wasnt really that interested, but just as a joke, he offer to pay $300 with case included. The guy just asked: cash?
So he bought it just because he felt like he was doing the deal of his life.

Anyway, after coming back home, here in Brazil, he just didnt care for the tone and tried to sell it and make a profit. But this model is pretty much unheard of here, so he just couldnt sell it for the price he wanted and wasnt too keen on making it even.
So he brought it to me and we ended up replacing the pickups for some custom wound high output pickups from a local brand. He managed to sell the original pickups for the price he paid for the whole bass and case.

BTW, after the pickup change, it became his main axe.

Silver threads and golden needles... :P

Good grief, it's hard enough for me to remember what I did yesterday... that was months ago, err... Dave, isn't it...? ;D

Do 4003-5ers go for that much?

ilan

Hard to tell, not that many for sale, and this one is especially nice and in mint condition. I guess $2,500 is okay, but it's still below his reserve price.

I only played a 4003-5 once, at one of the Guitar Centers here in the late 90s. They were asking $500. It was in very good shape but the string spacing made a Hofner feel wide by comparison. Hard to see much demand except as a collectible.
