Now, Dave, that's interesting! What do you mean? What bass do you have in mind, and where is the pickup located?

A light just got turned on above my head! Believe it or not! You, Dave, must have the wondrous Ampeg Scroll Bass in mind? Or is it the Danelectro? Come on, man, don't leave me in the middle of nowhere! Tell, as the Stones once put it, me!

I was just thinking of my two MusicMan basses. The pickup isn't right up against the bridge, but it's still close. And it works well.
Of course if I had been the designer, that pickup would have been near the neck pocket.

With no EBMM'sters hopefully lurking, I dare say that the Stingray humbucker would have benefitted from an inch more towards the neck. Instead, a 9 volt battery now has to do all the work supplying deep frequencies. Playing a two pup Bongo or Stingray with an additional front pup is certainly a totally different experience. Of course, the Stingray design is a child of its era, after all the seventies Jazz Basses had their rear pup edging towards the bridge too and didn't the Rics move away from the neck as well?

I think one reason my Holy Crap bass gets a nice tone (aside from the Barts) is the pickup placement. They spread the pups out a little further than normal. If you look in my avatar, you can see the neck pickup pretty much starts at the end of the fretboard. The bridge pickup is about an inch away. I can get a REALLY broad range of tones out of it. It does a pretty mean MM impression if I push it.

Except that the Scroll pups steadfastly refuse to break down so I still have your innards lying around!
