What was it about EB-1's that made people do carvings in them. That would have to be at least the 4th one I've seen in the last year. Even read an article that was attached to one about it......damn hippies! ;)

That was a horrible time. For instruments being mutilated that is.......

Again another victim of the custom bass movement of the 70's. for the most part I like these basses they are a product of the times. Bassists in the 70's had few choices then over night it seemed there were dozens of after market parts. some of us went a litle overboard myself included. Custom build were for people like JE his Fenderbirds being the perfect example.

Did Guild offer their SG clone with carving or do you see them a lot?

godofthunder

Yes Guild did offer those. they are a bit rare. I have always wanted one.

That was a bizarre fad that swept guitardom in the early 70s.  There was an article in Guitar Player that interviewed either the guy that started it or was the "best" at the hippy relief carving.  I believe in 1972 or 71.  His favorite target was SGs.  Hence Guild's savaging of their clone.  It always reminded me of watching Billy Jack.
Model One and Schallers?  Ish.

Oh come on you guys, you're talking as if the mods were done by a ten year old with a pocket knife. I'd say the one that did the carving certainly did know what they were doing, I think it looks bad ass.

Plus Alembic electronics sound really good too.

rockinrayduke

Well, they all didn't look this good!

Except for the crude edging routed around the carving. Nice carved dragon with a fifth grader routing around it.
