Cat rips New York
« on: January 02, 2009, 09:57:01 AM »
Cat Power's Doors'ish and "No, I'm not gonna use the original melody ever" cover of the old Sinatra chestnut will probably prove divisive here (I hated it initially, but it has since grown on me though it is a different song from the original now really), but it does feature the comparatively recent Epi GRipp3r (recognizable by the outsize body which is even larger than on the earliest Gibson models, the Fenderish J/P pup combo and the ABM-rip off modern bridge), which sounds nice on both versions here:

For those of you with rusty French, the song starts at 1.13:

You don't see a lot of Epis with a pro act, but then the Epi GRipp3r is a quality instrument belying its budget price.

We've taken too much for granted ... and all the time it had grown ...

"No, I'm not gonna use the original melody ever" means she's not capable of doing justice to whatever original she's butchering this week.

You think she really is a bad singer? Minimalist, sometimes forced so, yes, but incapable?

I just love Chan Marshall aka Cat Power. I think she's brilliant! One of my all time favourite female singers.

A lot of pro players use JCSes, but not often a Gripper indeed.

The Ripper sounds great, the singer seems OK at least she can sing pretty much in key, unlike Katy Perry. I have yet to hear a bad Ripper live.

Seems like she is not singing from her diaphragm, but her upper chest, kind of straining, to me.

This is how to sing- (Rob's Band)- Nice videos by the way!

I prefer Cat over almost any other singer. She has a totally own and unique style and she's not some 13 i a dozen rock singer.

Chris, our tastes just differ. No way I'll ever like her.

The Epi sounds great. I wonder if it has the original pickups.

BTW: I said something bad about rock singers, but of course that was no reaction on the post of Rob's band. I love the sound of Superfloor:)

I must agree with Dave. Cats trick - underplaying - has been around a little too long to rise eyebrows.

i think she became a critics favorite and the fans bought into it. her shows here in atlanta have always been a disaster. forgotten lyrics, stop then start the tune again, walking off in the middle of a show or just standing there in a trance doing nothing. i guess some people find this sort of behavior entertaining. ???
