I'll take that with a big grain of salt.

But by the same token, Dave, you should be prepared
for anything that might come, the postman always
doth ring twice.

Gwyneth glimpsed in rural Minnesota?!

Can we trade Gwyneth for a return of Rod Evans?
What the world needs now is a Mark 1 reunion. I mean they're all  here except for John and the clock is ticking.
Speaking of oh no, I can't figure how this didn't make it as an album cut let alone the lead single. Sounds like a hit to me.

and how is Nicky getting that tone? I'd wager its Roto flats with a celluloid pick tone rolled up and the mute in tact under the bridge cover.

Contrary to what James Bond says, a good Gibson should be stirred, not shaken.

Oh, that one!

I don’t know what it exactly is (Rod Evans’s voice?, the poor man’s Vanilla Fudge over-arrangements?, the less than state of the art production and recording?, the lingering 60ies pop influences?, the many covers, all of it?), but all of Mk I’s output sounds firmly entrenched in the 60ies for me, quaintly old-fashioned already for 68/69 when it came out. Purple only began to sound like the 70ies (and some people say: opened a new sound era though they weren’t the only ones) with In Rock (recorded in the second half of 69 and first half of 70). The first three Mk I albums all sound dated, In Rock sounded like the dawn of a new music age.

Visually, the Mk I line-up was out of touch too with what was going on at the time. When Ian Gillan first met Ritchie Blackmore and Jon Lord in 1969 he was amused by their obviously expensive, but no longer really fashionable or cool Carnaby Street dandy style clothes and their still coiffed-backcombed/teased hair. Having spent a lot of time in America (and there especially on the West Coast) where Mk I had been more popular than anywhere else, they had totally missed the changing vibe of late 60ies London.

By 1970 they looked like this with Gillan and Glover having joined.

"Can we trade Gwyneth for a return of Rod Evans?"

I have doubts whether Gwyneth will ever be able to equal Rod's apparent talent for disappearing off the face of the Earth for at least the last 40 years - he didn't even pick up his RRHF prize in 2016 (nor could anyone establish a prior contact to him). Rumors abound (generally from his former Captain Beyond colleague) how he was initially a hospital orderly turned medical doctor of respiratory therapy, but no pictures of him exist online following the embarrassing and frankly fraudulent "Bogus Purple" incident in 1980.

Rod's performance at those gigs was nothing to write home about. I think he did fine with Captain Beyond live (judging from bootlegs I've heard), but part of the reason why he lost his job with Purple in 1969 was that he had pitching issues live (when the music got louder) even in his more baritone range. That said, Purple - inspired by how Robert Plant sounded with early Led Zep - were on the lookout for a singer with a piercing falsetto/passaggio or middle voice. Enter Ian Gillan ...

Too bad for Rod, he could have fit right in with a band like Climax, Looking Glass or Hamilton Joe Frank and Reynolds. I hope he's doing well where ever he may be. That 60s pop sound was great and at least the guys sounded masculine instead of a screeching banshee.

As the music became more massive in the 70ies, the vocals had to cut through, especially live.

Great news! Gwyneth Lite is coming!

Gwyneth Paltrow launches lower-priced Good Clean Goop line at Target and Amazon

Now you'll be able to buy her Naked Elixir Body Oil, Powerscrub Scalp Detox and more at your nearest Target!

No word yet as to whether we'll see an economy version of the Vagina Candle. Maybe she's still working on making the fish aroma less intense.

(visibly aghast) But Dave! Were you really the one to float "Fish Fingers" as the product name for the new budget candle?!

That would be an excellent name! I ought to write to her and suggest it -- in your name, of course.
