You should try my EB-0L slot-head some day. Amazing bass. It has an 80s OBL single coil pickup under the cover that unleashed the bass's hidden character, previously suffocated by the mudbucker, in all its glory. I have a '70 EB3 bridge position mini humbucker and can transform this bass into an EB-3L very easily (only missing fretboard binding), but there's no need. It's a tone monster as is, very Rickenbacker-ish in character, in the best possible way, but with a deeper low end.

I have something similar on my Epi Newport - there is a Seymour Duncan Tele Bass replacement single coil lurking underneath the cover. For years I wondered why that mudbucker sounded like no other mudbucker. Then one day, curiosity won and I unscrewed the cover and saw what one of the pre-owners had left for me ...

I've kept it as is.  I have mudbuckers galore I could stick in there, but I've grown fond of the sound of my Newport with the "Seymour Duncan mockbucker".

Considering those are some kind of TB+ variant, there's probably less mud then you might expect.

I would prefer one good mud to three demi-muds.

Reminds me a bit of a mock up I made for modifying one of those SG-Zs from the 90s...

Not mudbuckers.

The specs for this one says the neck and middle pickups are SG Rhythm Bass and the bridge is SG Lead Bass. But "the modifications consist of two bonus SG Rhythm Bass pickups." No, a regular SG Bass already has one SG Rhythm Bass pickup at the neck. Trust Gibson to get its own specs wrong.

IIRC up until a few years ago, these were called TB-Plus anyway. Same construction as in a Thunderbird (blades w/ceramic magnets beneath) but the coils were spread much further apart. I don't think that has changed, but I could be wrong.

They were never offered for sale separately. A pic of the innards has been posted here more than once, but not recently. Again, I'm not sure that the current mudbucker-sized neck pickup is a new design or the TB+ with a new name.

They do crop up on ebay as people fiddle with their newly acquired SG basses and discard the original pups. That's how I got a set.
