Even in Germany (a happy hunting ground for all heavy rockers), Budgie were only known to a few.  I got to know them via their second album 'Squawk' with the iconic "Lockheed SR 71 Blackbird meets bird skull (not a budgie one though)" cover. A buddy at school loaned it to me, he was the only guy I knew that owned an album of theirs (and he gushed over it). This song stayed with me forever, it had something very primal and underground'ish to it:



No doubt that had also to do with Rodger Bain being the producer - he had produced the first three Sabbath albums and Judas Priest's debut (all with a similar primal sound).

Budgie was known to a select few in the states. People who dug through import and cutout bins. Great 70s rock and roll band. RIP

Impressive!

In my private in memoriam service, I have now gone through eight Budgie CDs almost consecutively. They really should have done better. The band they actually remind me most of is Trapeze (coincidentally, one of the later Trapeze guitarists, Rob Kendrick, also played with Budgie for a while). Some really strong material.
