Peter Cook Axis bass... one of 8 built...
« on: May 29, 2020, 01:34:37 PM »
Now this is a rarity and no idea of a true value...
No connection to seller...
I know Flat Eric has one... but without going through his page I'm not sure if it was 8 built...

I bet it's very heavy and with the strap button over the 16th fret, noticeable neck-dive.

I don't remember Flat Eric saying anything about excessive weight... but...
He "gifted" or "supplied" Peter Cook with a Axis guitar as he did not even own one of his own builds...
Eric's bass is different, as shown...

The body is a thick slab of rosewood. Unless it's chambered, this will be a boat anchor. OTOH this may reduce the neck-dive.

In answer to the "boat-anchor" question...
"It’s weight is one reason why I haven’t lugged it to a gig, mind you it’s not as heavy as my Gibson RD Artist now that’s a real pain in the neck to play, but the Axis is heavy enough..."
Relisted... has a few other basses for sale... hard reality for a variety of musos and other lockdown folks... needs the money...

Nice way to avoid telling you the actual weight. Easy enough to get close using the  bathroom scale method.

I found it funny that we both owned a PC and an RD, Dave... not many folks like that... at least my PC is NOT a boat-anchor, and my RD has been "trimmed" a wee bit...
In contact with the seller at the other place... I think he mostly plays Fenders... has a couple of other out of the ordinary basses he's selling too... a '67 Coronado 1 and a '67 Hopf Saturn... there's also a Precision Cabronita, which is not that common over this way...

That's a cool bass. Price seems reasonable?

There's a well known photo of one with JAE... Flat Eric's is the reverse colours to this one... if there was the capital I'd be on that beastie in a flash, boat-anchor or not... lol

Didn't sell and now reduced to 1490GBP
I just don't think he's going to find a buyer and not being a "classic" shape it is just an oddball to anyone but an instrument collector... sad reality...

There's a right price for everything.

The problem might be that you could count all the interested parties on one hand? I know there is one guy who buys a lot of John Birch guitars and basses when they come up for sale. There's a chance that if you are bidding on a John Birch instrument you are up against this guy, so that will drive up the market. I'm not sure a Peter Cook instrument even generates the sort of ripples that a Birch instrument does. We know who he is, we know that he built things for John Entwistle, but is there more of note beyond that?
