Neil Peart has gone to the great gig in the sky...

RIP Neil. I had no idea he was ill for so long, did he and his family keep it quiet? If so, it's good that his privacy was respected.

I marvelled at his drum solo at the Frankfurt Festhalle only a few years ago ... how devastating. So that is the reason why he called it a day with Rush.

A drum titan und a thoughtful man. May those paradiddles never end now, Neil.

There wasn't much of a family to speak of, Dave - he lost his wife and his daughter early on, which led to that first lengthy Rush hiatus before they came back with Vapor Trails.

True, but he later remarried and has a daughter from the second marriage. Same year as mine so she's only about 10 :(

I didn't know - I'm both happy and sad to hear that.  :-\

Dying from a brain tumor in this day and age is harsh, especially if you have been "Mr Fitness" all your life like Neil was.

I would imagine that Geddy and Alex will want to commemorate Neil with some type of charity gig and that Mike Portnoy is already rehearsing for it in his mind.  8)

I was devastated by the news. It was such a shock. It hit me harder than I would have expected, which made me realize just how important his lyrics were to me. Just copying a couple of my facebook posts here...

Tuesday the world lost one of the greatest drummers who ever lived. But for me, it was his lyrics that meant the most. They gave validity to my feelings about freedom of thought and expression as a teenager. His observations and social commentary, often using fantasy characters as metaphors, just made complete sense to me. This one may be worse than Squire or Wetton (And that's saying a LOT). Farewell to the King!

Up until yesterday, I guess I sort of took for granted how much Neil's lyrics meant to me. Coming out of a rough patch in my family's history, and a 2 year period of constantly being "the new kid", I started high school and got turned on to this crazy band out of Canada that seemed to speak directly to me and who I was. Rest in peace Neil, you made the world a better place for millions of people like me.
