Uwe, I'd think of it as a substitute for the pointy Gibson with black hardware you never got: http://archive.gibson.com/Files/USA_PDFs/Data_ContinentalV_bass.pdf

Another Gibson bass that I had no idea ever existed...

That one never made it into production. At least a couple of prototypes existed.

Thanks for educating me on that aspect of the story. I feel better now. Seriously.

Very Tobias-inspired design that one was, IMO. Not my cup of tea in the least.

But none of them have ever surfaced.
Uwe saw one at a NAMM, ordered it, but Gibson never delivered.

Playing a non-standard fretless Gibson I know this one would be of interest here if there was capability... she needs a home in Ze Kollection...

O ye of little faith! Why use the past tense? Gibson hasn't delivered yet! It's only been 14 years, Uwe is still hopeful!

Maybe we should send them a reminder.

I saw it at Frankfurt Musik Messe at the time, even held it in my hand (couldn't plug it), it looked the part, all boutiquish. Couldn't order it as they weren't sure at the time if they would ever bring it to Europe. Wouldn't sell the  specimen on display either, said they needed to take it back to the US to show it around there. Later on the 2007/2008 financial crisis hit Gibson hard - both as regards their refinancing and their sales - and Henry J., cutting costs and uncertain projects, had the model shelved. I heard from a Gibson employee that all prototypes/music fair show models were scrapped.

And now you have a shot at a one off Gibson bass made like none of the countless others.  :P

The listing now says

Predicted to Sell Soon
1 other person has this in their cart

I wonder, is that other person is from Frankfurt am Main? Does he have a finger poised in mid-air, waiting to strike?

clankenstein

Louder bass!.

It may be what I call a "Comes A Time" moment... that sudden realisation that you can't always get what you wnat and have to settle for less... a more realistic vision of life...
Mine was being offered a very limited picture disc by Neil Young which cost me a 3 figure sum... 200 copies exist, all numbered, private distribution by a WB Exec as Christmas prezzies... the same person later offered me another even more limited pic disc for a 4 figure sum... a "Southern Pacific" pic disc of which less than 10 were made and distributed by NY to his friends...
Pass...
The copy of Comes A Time, which was long ago convereted into a clock, will be sitting on the wall in my music room once completed... curiously, it does keep good time... :D
Moving on, as I suspect a certain noted German kollector has done... ;)
