A tribute band is not my cup of tea. Been there and done that in the early nineties when tribute bands hadn't even been invented.

Wow, really? We've had them here in the US since the 1970s - and they continue to be popular. Not my thing, either (to play in) but love seeing the ones that do it well.

Dutchmen don't get married even if they - like Rob - actually are and have been for decades, kids, house and all. It's the inborn urge of the Niederländer to revolt against convention!

And the only cover band I could picture myself in would be something like Manfred Mann's Earth Band where the arrangements are so off from the original that you leave your own, utterly individual stamp on the song to the point that peole think it is an original - which in a club situation where people want to hear what they know kind of defies the point.

If I'm true to myself, then I actually enjoy the process of creating new music even more than playing live. Only playing exact covers makes me feel - a daring comparison I know - kind of as if Miles Davis had been relegated to faithfully recreate trumpet lines in the Glenn Miller Orchestra.  :-\

I learned the hard way that its better to leave than to insist on something that doesn't work anymore. Since I'm a bit slow on those stuff, it took me over a year and half to take my lesson and start looking for other people to play music with. You definately did the right thing Rob.

I'm not getting married!

Ah.... That's the only thing "tied the knot" usually means over here, but I can see how you meant finishing it up. Sorry about that!

I really enjoy covers bands, but only loungecore or similar where they do covers in different genre's, one of next years college assignments is a covers set, its meant to be in the style of a wedding band to prepare students for that kind of work, but having discussed it with my tutor the wording is lax enough that I can do something off the wall.

Would love to hear how that turns out!!

Sounds like you made the right call Rob. When the time is right you will find the right situation for you.

Other euphemisms for leaving:
Packed it in
Gave my notice
Threw in the towel
or, the always popular "out like Grandma's teeth"

Or, in the Appalachians, "Lit a shuck."

Meaning that you had to leave, and before leaving the campfire would light a corn shuck to provide light while walking home.

It is part of the cycle. Take a break clear your head. Something will present itself,  good bass players are always in demand.
