Agreed.  I would never have expected them to be radio friendly and mainstream, but they got there.

When I hear them the description that comes to my mind for their sound is "monolithic". It ain't subtle, it ain't elegant, it's heavy-handed, largely humorless, but it's not dumb either and it's all their own. And while the Black Album was a far cry from the Prog-ish tendencies of "And Justice for All" and had none of the underground garage sound charm of "Kill 'em All", it wasn't AOR either, it was still dark and oppressive music played with an unforgiving might. Try selling 28 million units of that around a time where Nirvana was toppling all previous rock icons. The Black Album is saleswise head and shoulders above any heavy metal release and most hard rock releases of any time. It has sold more than Def Leppard's much more commercially engineered Hysteria (20 million units), almost as much as Led Zep's classic IV (which has been on sale almost two decades longer) and is only dwarfed by something like  AC/DC's Back in Black (more than 50 million units) which contains once again much more accessible music.

i love the early stuff. but i hate the guy playing bass for them now. Trujillio is a scab who joins established bands long after their prime... Suicidal, Ozzy and now Metallica.

But his name is Hetfield and he never played with Dio or Def Leppard.

I think it's funny; I wouldn't mind Justice 24/7 if it weren't for the awful production. The whole album is like a karaoke drum performance.  It's Metallica's last documented record of Cliff's contributions. The complicated song/prog- bent was plainly already there in Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets. As fer the missus, she won't be in another 54 days.
